Extended Side Angle Pose……why?
Yoga may be 5000 years old but most modern postures are from the late 19C and are still evolving today.
Postures are only the third part in a 8 part scheme of practice. So, though important- not essential!
The learning from postures is not how to be bendy, it is following the mind, the intellect, and your internal wittiness when you stop looking outward for sensations and start looking inward.
Side Angle Pose is often taught as a beginner pose……it’s pretty darn tricky!
So what is SAP teaching us -
Chain of connection from foot to arm,
Deep forward folding for the hip,
Capacity of the hip to support the spine,
How the spine can organise the body around itself without hyper displacement of the natural curves,
The shoulder girdle supports the upper spine,
That the body can work in extreme extension without eyesight dominating the sensory input.
And the list goes on on and on.
Most of the folks on Yoga social media are in their 20-30 and can bend like a pretzel 🥨 because they are young fit and most likely hyper mobile.
In my yoga practice we look at poses from different orientations to explore what it is the posture is telling us, this helps us to “be in the pose” if our joints are stiff or sore or if we are not ready for a ‘traditional’ hold…..but it also gives us new insights even after 25 years of practice!
As Frank Zappa said “the mind is like a parachute it only works if it’s open!”
Try yoga for your mind to open up to a new perspective.
