Not all children learn to talk one word at a time, and that’s okay 🤍

Some start with full phrases they’ve heard before, almost like little scripts, and use them in ways that make sense to them.

It might sound confusing at first…
But there’s actually a pattern behind it.

These “chunks” slowly evolve; getting mixed, adjusted, and reshaped, until they become more flexible and eventually turn into original sentences.

So when a child uses a phrase in an unexpected way, they’re not “getting it wrong.”
They’re building meaning in their own way.

Understanding this changes how we respond: less correcting, more observing, and supporting.

Because language development isn’t one-size-fits-all. And for some children, this is exactly how it’s meant to unfold.

If your child’s voice sounds rough after a long day of talking, it’s worth paying attention 👀

A tired, scratchy voice can be a sign that their vocal habits need a little support; not fixing, just guiding.

Simple shifts can go a long way:
💧 keep them hydrated throughout the day
🤫 teach them there are other ways to get attention besides raising their voice
🧘‍♀️ build in quiet moments to let their voice rest
🚫 discourage constant throat clearing (it does more harm than we think)

Healthy voices aren’t built overnight! It’s the small, everyday habits that protect them.

Start with one change today and notice the difference over time 🤍

Teaching your child to ask for help doesn’t have to be complicated 🤍

This week’s sign is all about connection: showing them how to give and receive help in a way they can actually understand.

It’s not just about the movement of your hands. It’s about how you use it in real moments:
✨ offering support when they’re struggling
✨ inviting them to be part of helping you

And the magic? Pairing the sign with your words every time so it sticks.

Because communication isn’t just taught; it’s modelled, over and over again.

Try this with your little one today and watch how it builds confidence in both of you.

Does your voice feel tired before you are? 🎤

Ongoing voice changes like hoarseness, strain, discomfort when speaking, or losing your voice by the end of the day aren’t something you should ignore—especially if they last more than a couple of weeks.

Your voice shouldn’t be breaking down with everyday use. These signs can indicate that your voice is working harder than it needs to.

The good news? Voice difficulties are treatable—especially when addressed early. 💛

If this sounds familiar, consider reaching out for support or save this post for later.

When we see concerns around a child’s speech, like a lisp, we don’t just look at the sounds - they often tell us there’s more happening underneath 💬

We may ask questions about things like dummy use, thumb sucking, sleep quality, or mouth breathing because these can all be linked to how the mouth, jaw, and airway develop and function.

Factors such as enlarged tonsils or adenoids can affect breathing, sleep, tongue posture, and even eating and swallowing patterns, which in turn can influence speech development.

That’s why understanding the full picture is so important. It helps us identify what’s contributing to a child’s speech patterns and choose the most effective support for them 💛

Sometimes therapy isn’t just about speech - it’s about connection 💛

Children learn best when they feel engaged, understood, and connected. When we follow their interests, join in their play, and create shared moments, communication begins to grow naturally.

Because just like adults, children switch off when there’s no connection; but when they feel involved, real learning happens!

Connection comes first… speech follows ✨

Key Word Sign of the Week: “More” 🤲💬

This is a simple, powerful sign to help your child request and express their wants. Using key word signs like this alongside spoken words can support early communication and reduce frustration while language is still developing.

Try using it during play, mealtimes, or when your child wants more of something - consistency is key! 💛

Follow along for more key word signs you can use at home each week.

Different doesn’t mean “needs fixing” 💛

Being neurodivergent, like having ADHD, means your brain thinks and processes the world in its own unique way. For many, getting a diagnosis later in life can feel like finally understanding a part of yourself that never quite made sense before… and that can be incredibly validating.

At Talkshop, we focus on tools, not rules. Tools that support you when you need them, not rigid expectations that don’t fit everyone. Because communication isn’t just one person’s responsibility; it’s a shared experience.

Our goal is to help individuals understand their strengths, embrace their differences, and build confidence in how they communicate every day ✨

If this resonates with you, save this post or reach out to learn how we can support you 💛

Key Word Sign is a simple and supportive way to help children communicate before they have words 💬✋

It involves using clear, consistent gestures alongside spoken language to highlight key words in a message. The goal is not to replace speech, but to support and encourage it.

Unlike Auslan, Key Word Sign does not use full grammar or complete sentences. It focuses only on the most important words to help children understand and express themselves more easily.

In Australia, we use Australian Key Word signs, which may differ from those used internationally.

Follow along as we share a KEY WORD SIGN OF THE WEEK so you can start using them with your child 💛

Communication isn’t just about words 💬

There are so many ways we can express ourselves: through speech, sounds, gestures, signs, communication devices, and more. Every method is valid, and often we naturally use a mix of them in everyday interactions.

Communication is about sending and receiving messages in ways that are functional and meaningful. That’s why it’s so important to have access to different ways to express ourselves, not just one.

Because at the end of the day, limiting communication limits connection, and everyone deserves to be heard in the way that works best for them 💛

Will my child’s stutter just “go away”? 🤔

For some children, early stuttering can resolve on its own - but not always! That’s why we look at key factors such as how long it’s been happening, family history, how often and where it happens, and how it impacts your child’s confidence.

Early support from a speech pathologist can make a big difference, helping your child build fluency, confidence, and positive communication experiences 💛

If you’ve noticed your child struggling with stuttering, don’t wait - early intervention can really help!
