Here are 12 crucial habits we’ve adopted—and in the video we explain why you might want to consider them too:

1. Say Goodbye to the Microwave

We ditched the microwave in our home decades ago.

Why?

Studies show it denatures nutrients and reduces the bioavailability of your food.

Instead, try heating your meals in the oven for just 5 minutes at 200°C.

Your body will thank you!

Don’t heat the milk or water for your baby/infant in the microwave.

It destroys the nutritional value (and the structure of the water).

2. Avoid Seed Oils

Seed oils (like canola, soybean, and sunflower) are highly processed and toxic to your body.

This also includes margarine.

They contribute to inflammation, oxidative stress, and chronic diseases.

Stick to healthy fats like butter, coconut oil, ghee, meat fats, and olive oil.

3. Skip Perfumes, Fragrant Candles, Wet Wipes, and Room Fresheners

These are more than just irritants—they’re endocrine disruptors.

They severely disrupt your hormones.

Some studies even show that they’re worse for your health than cigarette smoke.

Choose natural alternatives like essential oils or beeswax candles.

Carry a fresh wet face washer in a zip lock bag in the car or picnic basket to freshen during outings.

Use filtered water on your face to remove makeup.

4. Say No to Farmed Fish

Farmed fish are often riddled with parasites, colouring, antibiotics and hormones so farmed fish is best avoided.

You can’t trust the labels that say: wild-caught fish because most wild-caught fish come from farmed fish.

The industry is poorly regulated.

Most fish contain mercury and other heavy metals, so we don’t eat fish, other than sardines in springwater, which has the lowest amount of toxins.

5. Watch Out for Plastic-Packaged Foods

Plastic leaches harmful chemicals into food over time, especially when exposed to heat.

Even without using plastics we now absorb plastics the size of a credit card into our body every week, through the air we breathe, and the water we drink!

Plastic is everywhere, causing massive estrogen imbalances.

Opt for fresh, unpackaged foods or store your meals in glass containers.

6. Be Selective with Your Vitamins

Not all supplements are created equal.

Many don’t meet your body’s functional nutrient requirements.

They are packed with fillers and created by marketing companies, rather than health experts.

Be discerning and focus on supplements that target your needs.

7. Cut Out Artificial Sweeteners

They might seem like a low-calorie fix, but artificial sugars are harmful to your brain and gut.

They impair cognitive function (artificial sweeteners can kill your brain cells) and disrupt your microbiome.

If you feel hungry and crave sugary foods, your body is most likely thirsty and lacking minerals to boot.

Try drinking a glass of water with a pinch of healthy salt.

You will feel energized and your hunger pangs will subside.

8. Avoid Low-Fat Products

Low-fat dairy and other “diet” products often contain added sugars and chemicals to make up for the lost flavour.

Full-fat options are not only more satisfying but also better for your metabolism and hormones.

This includes full-fat milk, cheese, yoghurt, smoothies, and full-fat meat.

9. Say No to Aluminium in Your Kitchen and Bathroom

From foil and tinned food to deodorants and cookware, aluminium is everywhere—and it’s linked to neurodegenerative diseases.

Switch to stainless steel, glass, and aluminium-free personal care products.

Aluminium from deodorants will leak into your lymphatic system and then your blood, causing your red blood cells to stick together, which leads to all kinds of problems.

10. Skip Imported Fermented Foods

Fermented foods are fantastic for gut health—unless they’ve been irradiated during importation, which kills beneficial bacteria.

Choose local, unpasteurized options for maximum benefit like Love Your Guts, which supports Tasmanian farmers.

11. Be Cautious with Personal Care Products

Many sunscreens, moisturizers, and soaps are laden with chemicals that seep into your skin.

Look for natural, non-toxic alternatives to avoid exposing your body to harmful substances.

Washing your hands with antibacterial soap kills your gut microbiome for instance so that is not an option.

Use hot water or safe organic soaps.

12. Keep an Eye on What You Put On Your Skin

Your skin absorbs everything you apply to it, so treat it like a second stomach.

Whether it’s sunscreen, lotion, or makeup, choose products that are as pure as the food you eat.

Your skin is your largest organ.

Think of it as a big mouth, everything you put on it goes into your blood, and then your liver has to work overtime to filter the toxins out.

These are just some of the things we avoid in our household.
