2023: The year of being brave!
As 2023 draws to a close, it’s time to reflect on what a year it has been. Whilst I started the year knowing I needed to make a change, I have definitely surprised myself!
At dinner with my much more laid back cousin in February he said to me “just do it” which ultimately pushed me to do what I’d always dreamt of and had been very seriously contemplating but was a little scared to actually set the wheels in motion; open my own private practice! Much easier said than done for someone who is much more comfortable taking risks than me!!
But fast forward to December and the year has disappeared! I’ve had the pleasure of working with beautiful families who have challenged me, humoured me and I have revelled in every one of their successes. The books have been 80% full since opening in term 2 and reached 100% capacity at the end of term 3 without any targeted or serious advertising of my services, purely through word of mouth.
It has been incredibly humbling to have had such staunch support from people like my previous employers and physio who operate their own small businesses, family friends, former colleagues and of course my immediate family and friends who have had genuine interest in how the set up and day to day running of the practice is going. Their championing of me has been such a support and so unexpected.
I give thanks to my supervisor Jessica Colmer (Green) who offers incredible support when it comes to all things OT and I look forward to this partnership continuing into the future.
It’s been a wonderful year of diving into Animal Assisted Therapy (amongst many other areas) and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the training I’ve undertaken with Therapy Dogs Australia and The American Hippotherapy Association as well as attending the Animal Therapies Ltd conference in Feb this year. I can’t wait for my journey into AAT to really take off in 2024 after hitting pause momentarily this year! 🤞🏻
It won’t always be smooth sailing but the transition to self-employed has been wonderful so far and I eagerly anticipate 2024 and the future of Kidlets Allied Health!
Cheers to my Grandmother too for the name inspiration and my good friend from High School; Sarah Choo for my logo design! 💕
