A wonderful opportunity last week to present on the topic of supporting swimmers with additional needs at the 2024 Australian Swim Schools Association Conference as a Keynote Speaker.

The audience of 200 delegates included swim school owners and directors as well as teachers and coaches from Australia and overseas. I was humbled by the determination of so many delegates to learn more about their swimmers and to be curious about how better they can support them in their swimming lessons.

Thank you to ASSA for the opportunity to level up our swim teaching cohort and work together to support the needs of swimmers with additional needs.

Training options available - please contact me to discuss your centre’s needs.

I am thrilled to be back in Brisbane for the 2024 Animal Therapies Ltd (ATL) conference.

It’s been a wonderful day connecting with clinicians and educators from around Australia as well as hearing from Dr Rise VanFleet as the keynote speaker.

This sector is growing, there is a lot of exciting research being undertaken and a unified commitment to education across all sectors of the Australian community regarding the implementation of animal assisted therapy interventions and programs and assistance animals.

At the root of course, is the continued commitment to being cognisant and proactive about animal welfare and working ethically with animals in therapy.

Looking forward to Day 2!!

2023: The year of being brave!

As 2023 draws to a close, it’s time to reflect on what a year it has been. Whilst I started the year knowing I needed to make a change, I have definitely surprised myself!

At dinner with my much more laid back cousin in February he said to me “just do it” which ultimately pushed me to do what I’d always dreamt of and had been very seriously contemplating but was a little scared to actually set the wheels in motion; open my own private practice! Much easier said than done for someone who is much more comfortable taking risks than me!!

But fast forward to December and the year has disappeared! I’ve had the pleasure of working with beautiful families who have challenged me, humoured me and I have revelled in every one of their successes. The books have been 80% full since opening in term 2 and reached 100% capacity at the end of term 3 without any targeted or serious advertising of my services, purely through word of mouth.

It has been incredibly humbling to have had such staunch support from people like my previous employers and physio who operate their own small businesses, family friends, former colleagues and of course my immediate family and friends who have had genuine interest in how the set up and day to day running of the practice is going. Their championing of me has been such a support and so unexpected.

I give thanks to my supervisor Jessica Colmer (Green) who offers incredible support when it comes to all things OT and I look forward to this partnership continuing into the future.

It’s been a wonderful year of diving into Animal Assisted Therapy (amongst many other areas) and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the training I’ve undertaken with Therapy Dogs Australia and The American Hippotherapy Association as well as attending the Animal Therapies Ltd conference in Feb this year. I can’t wait for my journey into AAT to really take off in 2024 after hitting pause momentarily this year! 🤞🏻

It won’t always be smooth sailing but the transition to self-employed has been wonderful so far and I eagerly anticipate 2024 and the future of Kidlets Allied Health!

Cheers to my Grandmother too for the name inspiration and my good friend from High School; Sarah Choo for my logo design! 💕

The start of my Hippotherapy journey! 🐴

Hippotherapy is the practice of manipulating equine movement to engage sensory, neuro motor and cognitive systems to promote functional outcomes in the fields of Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy or Speech Pathology. It is evidence-based practice sitting alongside and within a comprehensive treatment plan.

I’m absolutely thrilled to be attending this course and looking forward to being able to include Hippotherapy as a tool in my Occupational Therapy intervention programs.

A huge thank you to RDA Carine in WA for hosting this professional development course.

Fine motor fun!

Working on a longer term project to address our fine motor skills with a nice take home keepsake and lots of learning and skill practice without realising!

First, we had to prepare the wool by cutting it from the balls of wool.

Then, we had to paint our lizard cut out and plan our design.

We had to tie the wool onto the lizard, tie the next colour to the previous, wrap it around the cut out and tie it off at the end. What a whole lot of bilateral coordination and fine motor skill! 🎉

Thanks CleverPatch for this awesome project. The kiddies loved it and it was learning rich!

Saturday morning CPD

So important to keep on top of evidence based programs to support my little people and know how to implement these programs correctly. Excited to start using Zones with confidence in sessions!

Thanks to Elizabeth for presenting this training from the US at a time that works for us here in Australia!!
