Ever notice your arthritis flares more, your asthma feels tighter, or your blood sugar swings on cooler days? You’re not imagining it, the change in seasons can impact chronic conditions more than we realise.

Dropping temperatures can influence circulation, immune response, activity levels, and how well conditions are managed daily. Sometimes the shift is subtle, and it’s easy to blame it on “just feeling off.”

𝗔𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗺𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼:

▪️ Review your management plan with your GP

▪️ Ensure your medications are up to date

▪️ Confirm your vaccinations are current

▪️ Book a health assessment if it’s been a while

A Chronic Disease Management Plan can also help you access allied health services, including podiatry, dietetics, and psychology, at a reduced cost, making ongoing care more practical.

Staying proactive means you can keep symptoms under control, maintain your energy, and enjoy the season without surprises.

You might not always remember the appointment…
but you remember how someone made you feel.

The calm voice when you were anxious.
The person who noticed you were a bit quieter than usual.

The one who took an extra moment, even on a busy day.

That’s our nurses.

Every day, they step into rooms where people are worried, in pain, or unsure, and somehow make things feel more manageable, more human.

It’s not just clinical skill.

It’s patience. Presence. The small things most people don’t see.

And for many patients, that’s what stays with them long after they leave.

Today, we’re simply saying thank you for the care, the consistency, and the way you show up for our community.

If you’ve been putting off a visit, know that you’ll be met with that same care here.

You remembered everyone else’s needs this week.

Lunches packed, messages replied, things organised.

But that check-up you’ve been meaning to book?

Still sitting at the bottom of the list.
For many women, it’s not that you don’t care about your health, it’s just that everything (and everyone) else comes first.

And over time, small things get delayed.
Then delayed again.

This Mother’s Day, maybe it’s not about doing more, maybe it’s about finally doing one thing for yourself.

A check-up.
A conversation.
Something you’ve been meaning to ask.
Whenever you’re ready, we’re here to support you, with time, care, and no pressure.

You went to bed early…
but you still woke up exhausted.

By mid-afternoon, you’re running on coffee, pushing through brain fog, and wondering why rest doesn’t feel like rest.

For some people, it’s not just a “busy week” or “bad sleep.”
It could be something happening during sleep, without you even knowing.

Sleep apnoea can cause your breathing to stop and start throughout the night.

Not long enough to fully wake you… but enough to leave your body constantly disrupted.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲:
• Loud snoring or gasping
• Morning headaches
• Poor focus or memory
• Ongoing fatigue, no matter how much sleep they get
• Feeling irritable or flat

And it can go on for years without being picked up.

The good news is, checking for it doesn’t have to be complicated.

At Banksia Medical Centre, home sleep studies allow you to be assessed in your own bed, no hospital stay, no overnight clinic.

Speak with your GP to see if a sleep study is appropriate for you.: https://www.banksiamedicalcentre.com.au/contact

If you or your child is dealing with more frequent flare-ups in the cooler months, swipe through. And if it's becoming hard to manage, your GP is the right first stop.

Heart Week is a good reminder that heart health isn't just something to think about when something goes wrong.

Many of the risk factors for heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and elevated blood sugar don't cause noticeable symptoms. You can feel completely fine and still be at risk.

A Heart Health Check with your GP is a Medicare-subsidised assessment that looks at your risk of having a heart attack or stroke in the next five years. It's available for Australians aged 45 and over, and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 30 and over.

If it's been a while since you've had a proper check-in with your GP about your heart health, this week is a good prompt.

Your thyroid is a small gland in your neck, but it controls more than most people realise. Metabolism, energy, body temperature, heart rate, and mood.

When it's working well, you barely notice it. When it's not, the signs are easy to miss.

Thyroid conditions are among the most commonly underdiagnosed, largely because the symptoms overlap with so many other things.

𝗔 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴:

▪️ An underactive thyroid can be associated with persistent fatigue, weight gain, cold sensitivity, low mood, and brain fog

▪️ An overactive thyroid can be associated with a rapid heartbeat, weight loss, anxiety, tremors, and feeling excessively warm

▪️ Both are more commonly diagnosed in women, though men are also affected

▪️ Diagnosis starts with a simple blood test ordered by your GP

If any of this has been sitting with you for a while, it is worth raising at your next appointment.

Flu season arrives each year, but many people underestimate how easily influenza spreads.

Annual vaccination helps reduce the risk of serious illness and protects vulnerable members of the community. Because influenza viruses change over time, the vaccine is updated regularly to help maintain protection.

A simple conversation with your GP can help determine if the influenza vaccine is recommended for you this season.
