You’re not failing. You’re looking deeper — and that’s powerful.
Gut healing is slow and subtle, but it often brings the stability our kids need to start feeling like themselves again.

The gut-brain axis is real. When your young person feels anxious, it’s often a body response as much as a mind one.
Start with small shifts — slow meals, more water, less ultra-processed snacks.
Their nervous system will thank you.

Melatonin isn’t always the answer.

Here’s what I often recommend for sleep-deprived teens, based on what’s going on underneath:
1. 🧂 Magnesium – helps calm an overactive nervous system
2. 🧠 L-theanine or passionflower – gentle support for anxiety-driven insomnia
3. 🕰️ Sleep-wake hygiene – circadian rhythm cues like morning light + no blue light at night
4. 🥗 Nourishing dinner – blood sugar crashes at 3am = brain alert
5. 🔬 Functional testing – to uncover imbalances in hormones, gut, or nutrient levels

Every teen is different, and this is never one-size-fits-all. If you’ve tried “everything” and nothing’s working, it might be time to look a little deeper — and more gently.

Behind every teen lying awake at 1am is a nervous system stuck in overdrive. Whether it’s from chronic stress, trauma, overstimulation, or anxiety — their brain often can’t settle, even when they want to.

As a naturopath, I look at:
🌿 Nutrient deficiencies (like magnesium + B vitamins)
🌀 Dysregulated cortisol patterns
📱 Nervous system overload from screens + stress
🧪 Underlying inflammation or gut-brain dysfunction

This isn’t about blaming habits — it’s about gently understanding the why behind them.

✨ Parents: if your teen can’t sleep, can’t wake, and seems to be slipping away emotionally, there is so much you can do to support their system naturally.

Next post: How we can reset their sleep-wake cycle gently and supportively 🌅

“It’s just a phase, right?”
Your teen is staying up past midnight, sleeping in until lunchtime on weekends, and constantly feeling tired — but this isn’t just normal adolescence. Disrupted sleep patterns can be one of the earliest signs of deeper mental health challenges.

🧠 Sleep and mental health are deeply connected. For teens, poor sleep can:
• Worsen anxiety and low mood
• Disrupt hormone regulation
• Increase impulsivity and overwhelm
• Trigger a cascade of nervous system dysregulation

As a naturopath who supports young people, I see this all the time — and I want you to know: there’s more going on than just screen time habits.

💬 In this series, we’ll explore what’s happening underneath your teen’s sleep patterns and how natural, holistic support can help.

You’ve been so focused on their mental health…
that you’ve forgotten your own.

Parenting through this can feel like running a marathon with no finish line.
You’re tired, stretched thin, and relying on sheer willpower to keep going.

Your body needs care just as much as theirs.
Stable blood sugar, restorative sleep, replenished nutrients, and a calmer nervous system can be the difference between constant reactivity and being able to respond with steadiness.

You don’t have to “fix” yourself first — but when your energy and resilience improve, you have more capacity to support them without losing yourself in the process.

💬 Take a breath right now. Drop your shoulders. You matter too.

✨ What if once a week, you did a simple parent + teen check-in together?

A gentle moment to ask:
• How’s your energy been?
• Any changes in sleep, appetite, moods?
• What have you been craving (emotionally and nutritionally)?
• What’s feeling good… and what’s feeling off?

This isn’t about being clinical — it’s about connection.
It shows them they’re not alone. It creates space for honesty.
And it’s a reminder that health is a family conversation, not something they have to navigate in isolation.

🌿 And if something comes up that feels out of balance — you’re right there beside them, ready to support.

You don’t have to be perfect. Just present.
The check-in itself is the medicine.

💬 “I just don’t know how to help them anymore…”
If that’s a thought you’ve had lately — you’re not alone.
So many parents I speak to are watching their teen change before their eyes… feeling shut out, helpless, and heartbroken.

🌱 As a naturopath working in youth mental health, I see every day how deep the struggle can go — and how much healing is possible when we stop treating just the symptoms and start supporting the whole person.

✨ If you’re ready to understand what’s really going on for your teen — physically, emotionally, and neurologically — let’s start that conversation together.
