ADHD in women and girls, as a general rule, tends to look different. In most cases it is very internalized. While they struggle with focus, it’s often their thoughts that are hyperactive rather than their behaviour. This can lead to overwhelm, emotional breakdowns, feelings of insecurity, isolation, etc. Women tend to “mask” in order to fit into their neurotypical day. Mask is exhausting ! People are often confused when I tell them I work with ADHD (among other things) in my practice. I can see the confused looks wondering what the heck I’m talking about. Many wouldn’t consider ADHD a mental health issue. The truth is, ADHD is way deeper than most people think. It impacts our executive function skills which in turn impact things like emotional regulation, memory, sleep, organization, etc. This create constant tiny speed bumps in a persons day which is exhausting and frustrating particularly because a neurodiverse ADHD brain tends to work fast and wants to always move. This in turn often leads to overwhelm, anxiety and depression. #

Since ADHD often looks so different typically in females, they are overlooked and under diagnosed. Current studies on ADHD mainly focus on adolescent boys. Girls have been, and continue to be completely overlooked and underrepresented in research. Thankfully that is slowly changing, but more needs to be done!
