Gut health is being discussed more and more in the media. You’ve probably heard the word “microbiome” or people discussing microbial diversity and good bacteria.
Then it’s eat this, don’t eat that and even more so now, it’s buy this tablet, that powder or this gut health elixir.
I think one of the simplest ways of looking at gut health is adding VARIETY of plant foods. It doesn’t mean you have to turn vegan or vegetarian. It doesn’t have to be an expensive exercise and it doesn’t have to be difficult to achieve. Aim for variety and try to eat 30 different plant foods in one week. This helps to feed the different bacteria in our gut which help a them to improve our gut health.
30!!! I hear you cry but let’s take one meal at a time.
For example a salad like this has lentils, quinoa, pumpkin seeds, almonds, sunflower seeds, roasted red capsicum, cucumber, yellow tomatoes, red tomatoes, parsley, rocket, lemon juice. 12 just like that. You could add spinach, avocado, pomegranate seeds and currants and that would boost it to 16 in just one salad.
Try 30 a week and if you need any ideas let me know!!
