Abbie is one of the registered nurses putting patient experience at the centre of every interaction in her role in Robina Hospital’s Medical Imaging department.

In her experience, it’s the simple things that mean the most.

“We understand the patients might be feeling vulnerable, especially if they are coming to see us after a new cancer diagnosis, so we do everything we can to put them at ease,” she said.

“We get a lot of positive feedback from the patients about the great culture here and how much they enjoy coming to Robina Hospital.”

Abbie said it all starts with a happy team and is one of the main drivers behind their ‘Culture Club’ initiative.

“We started it last year to get everyone together outside of work and it’s been great for the team culture,” she said.

“I don’t think I’ve ever worked in such a supportive environment.”

Staff, patients and special guests came together to reflect and commemorate Anzac Day last week, as part of the annual Robina Hospital service.

Held in the Palliative Care garden, there were guest speakers, laying of the wreath and poems read to honour those who served.

In a powerful and heartfelt moment, Clinical Support Officer Erman Korbay delivered a moving recitation of Atatürk’s Tribute in Turkish, as the Robina community came together.

Lest we forget.

The 23 Hour Unit at Robina Hospital is passionate about giving patients a good experience. But don't just take our word for it - check out a recent compliment they received. 👇

"Nursing staff on the 23-hour ward were amazing... the nurses were supportive, professional, thoughtful, caring and happy to clarify when I was feeling overwhelmed." 🫶

This Patient Experience Week, we went to meet some of the nursing legends behind the great feedback, to get their take on ensuring patients have a positive stay.

Associate Nurse Unit Manager (NUM), Rincy, said it all comes down to the dedication of her team.

"I love what I do and truly believe when we look after the staff, they feel empowered to provide the best care possible to our patients," she said.

"It's a beautiful unit with a great team."

Take a look at what a good patient experience means to Rincy, Jenna, Jack, Lucy and Megan. 👉

Radiographer James has channelled the strength and resilience of his hero Captain America to be where he is today. 🦸‍♂️

Following more than 15 years in a clinical role at Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH), he recently stepped into a Team Leader position in the Robina Hospital Medical Imaging team.

It's a professional milestone that came after huge personal challenges, as James battled years of chronic pain and multiple major surgeries due to a degenerative spinal condition.

“Within two years, I went from being bed‑bound in intensive care to a senior leadership position," James said.

“I’m learning a lot and seeing a whole new side of how the hospital operates in this position."

If you see James around, you'll spot the iconic superhero symbol on his scrubs.

“It’s part of who I am, and I love bringing my authentic self to work,” he said.

Sad news: Nat is leaving Robina ED ☹️

Happy news: she will still be with Gold Coast Health, just in another role. 🥳

Nurse Nat has been part of the Robina ED “furniture” since 2009, beginning her journey as a fresh-faced, quiet nursing graduate.

“It was never on my bingo card to stay there so long, but when you find a good thing it’s hard to let
go,” she said.

“I have learnt so much from some amazing mentors and had colleagues become not only friends but also chosen family.”

She has too many highlights in the department to list, but said the standout are all the different people she's been lucky enough to meet along the way.

“I will be forever grateful for our ED because it really has been a wonderful place for me to learn and grow as a nurse,” she said.

Nat is now joining the hospital’s Clinical Response Unit, where we have no doubt she’ll be amazing. 💗

Every day, older adults arrive in our Emergency Department (ED) after a fall - the leading cause of emergency presentations for people over 65 - and they can have devastating consequences.

Dr Megan sees the impact firsthand, and she’s determined to change the story.

By working closely with specialist nursing teams at Robina Hospital and Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH), she has led the development of a new falls‑care pathway designed to deliver safer, faster, more coordinated care for older patients.

This April No Falls 2026, we celebrate Dr Megan's dedication to improving outcomes and quality of life for older adults in our community.

We’re celebrating Queensland Youth Week with a special youth‑led art project! 🎨✨

Local emerging artist Hayley Stanich - a young Queenslander who successfully received a Youth Week Community Event Grant- is running creative drop‑in workshops for young people across the Paediatric Ward and Children and Youth Mental Health Services.

“I’ve always loved making things with my hands, but it wasn’t until my health began to decline that art became a central part of my life," Hayley said.

"My art brought me glimmers of hope and calm, helping me hold on to something positive when my world felt heavy.”

Young people will help shape a vibrant, co‑created artwork that reflects their voices, experiences and hopes.

“No one understands young people better than young people themselves,” Hayley said.

“Artmaking lets them be seen, heard and valued on their own terms.”

The final collaborative piece will be proudly displayed at Gold Coast Health as a lasting celebration of Youth Week and the creativity of the young people who shaped it.

From Robina to rural Queensland, registered nurse Clare is making an impact where it matters most.

Her drive to maintain a varied nursing career, combined with her passion for remote and Indigenous health has led her as far north as Cape York – thousands of kilometres from her Gold Coast home.

“I’ve been nursing for nearly 18 years, and I just felt I needed a change,” Clare said.

“I was highly specialised working in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), but I wanted to be more of a jack of all trades."

She now feels she has the perfect balance - working short-term contracts across Robina Hospital and Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH), while also picking up rural and remote placements for two to four weeks at a time in between.

“For me, nursing is about making people’s lives better, whether that’s having a yarn or helping them feel more comfortable with pain relief,” she said.

“No matter where you show up, the goal is the same.”

Following some time in ICU at Robina Hospital, Clare is off to Normanton in Queensland’s Gulf Country next.🧳👩‍⚕️

A new chapter is starting at Robina Hospital.✨

Following the move of the Complex Management Unit to the new H Block at Gold Coast University Hospital, H2 East is now being refurbished – reimagining the ward to better support older adults and people experiencing cognitive impairment. 🏡

The refreshed ward will include 20 beds (10 Acute Cognitive beds and 10 Acute Geriatric beds), with a strong focus on comfort, familiarity and connection.

Gold Coast Health Nurse Unit Manager Tracey Miller said the refurbished ward will better support older adults and people experiencing cognitive impairment.

“This refit at Robina gives us the opportunity to create a space that feels calm, familiar and supportive for patients,” Tracey said.

“Thoughtful design elements such as clear wayfinding, access to natural light and comfortable, homelike spaces can help people feel more settled, maintain independence and stay connected during their care.”

From personalised bedrooms and quiet activity spaces to a revitalised garden terrace and nature-inspired artwork, the ward has been carefully designed to support wellbeing at every step. 🌿

Works are now underway, with H2 East Robina set to reopen mid-year.

We're proud to announce a new diabetes and endocrinology consultation service has launched at Robina Hospital.

Endocrinologist Dr Aongus O'Brolchain, Dr Yi Shan Der and Diabetes Nurse Practitioner Nichola Hinton are joining forces to provide weekday inpatient consultations, bringing specialist diabetes care directly to clinicians and patients across the hospital.

“The goal is world-class diabetes care and support for surgical, rehab and orthopaedic teams, as well as helping our medical colleagues and developing a base for research into endocrinology,” Dr O'Brolchain said.

“We want to establish ourselves in clinics and inpatient consultation services and help Robina become the best hospital it can be.”

It’s a great step forward for specialist care on the southern Gold Coast.

After eight years volunteering at Robina Hospital, Colleen still finishes each shift feeling inspired.

“You hear so many sad stories, but what shines through in each story is the bravery of the people involved,” she said.

Colleen said she gets a lot out of helping people at what can often be a stressful time – visiting hospital.

“It’s a nice thing to help people and lessen their anxiety ahead of their appointments,” she said.

Thank you, Colleen, for your efforts to make hospital visits as seamless as possible.
