If you didn't know, this month is Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder awareness month! โญ

This is particularly relevant as both of us (Kate and Emmett) have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome - and so do many many gifted and twice-exceptional people.

EDS refers to connective tissue disorders that impact the whole body - usually characterised by joint hypermobility and full/partial dislocations, stretchy and fragile skin, chronic pain, fatigue, and other diverse symptoms. Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD) refers to related conditions that cause similar symptoms but don't meet the strict criteria for EDS.

Research and anecdotal evidence has found an overlap between giftedness, neurodivergence and hypermobility, and this is something we've noticed come up over and over again in the children (and grown-ups) we work with.

In fact, there is a proposed theory which, while not formulated with giftedness in mind, proposes an explanation for the overlap of conditions and experiences we see constantly in the gifted:

๐Ÿ’ซ Hypermobility
๐Ÿ’ซ Autism and ADHD
๐Ÿ’ซ CFS/ME
๐Ÿ’ซ Histamine intolerance
๐Ÿ’ซ Dysautonomia/POTS/temperature regulation issues
๐Ÿ’ซ GI issues (including IBS, gastroparesis, etc.)
๐Ÿ’ซ Hormonal disorders
๐Ÿ’ซ Anxiety, depression, OCD, emotional dysregulation, chronic stress
๐Ÿ’ซ Gender diversity, identifying as LGBTQIA+.. and a lot more.

There's a useful article on this theory and giftedness here if you're interested: https://gro-gifted.org/rccx-theory-and-giftedness-a-promising-new-line-of-research/

And if any of this resonates with you, keep an eye out - we're hoping to post more information about EDS and HSD over the next month! We also have a livestream on the topic available to members ๐Ÿงก
