so incredible

Introducing the woman behind Nurtured Journeys.

Talitha Herrick is an Endorsed Private Practice Midwife following her calling in nurturing couples to create informed, positive journeys through pregnancy, birth and beyond. Graduating from Nursing at CQU in 2001 she specialised in Neonatal Care before she began her midwifery career in 2012. She has since worked in tertiary, private, and rural hospital settings and as Director of My Own Midwife GC. Her experience in working with families has given her scope to holistically consider the individual needs of women.

Talitha understands the system, how to navigate this and why it is essential couples are informed and feeling they have the power to lead their experience in birth. She believes women deserve a positive, transformative birth and she knows that when preferences are nurtured this can be achieved.

Talitha’s passion lies in facilitating an empowering journey through the sharing of evidence-based knowledge, exploration of beliefs/fears and transforming them to offer connection to the innate power within. Childbirth is a deeply meaningful and significant event effecting the life-long journey of parenting. She has seen first-hand the effectiveness of a known care provider and use of Hypnobirthing in creating a positive birth experience.

As the week brings us the final closures of our business, we extend a farewell and thanks to many.

Firstly we extend our thanks to all the families we have been lucky enough to inform, advocate for and support. Pregnancy is a deep journey of exploring, learning, adjusting & we as midwives are gratefully serving in our provision of care. Birth, a sacred portal of transformation we have been honoured to witness. Parenting, a complicated, fascinating journey of growth we have joyfully supported. Thankyou for investing in your knowledge and development of trust.

Thanking midwives whom have walked with us - for making the team work as well as it did. We relied on one another 24hrs a day/ 7days a week. The communication, devotion and integrity was exceptional.

Thanking our amazing secretaries Beth & Lyn. Your pleasant smiles & voice made the clinic run smooth.

Thanking the owners of 207 Currumburra Road, Ashmore. The clinic provided us a comfortable space to practice for 10 years. It provided a place for mother’s to meet & connect. Gratitude goes out to other health providers such as lactation consultants Shona & Arlie, osteopath Victoria, massage therapists Meaghan & Kristina. Thanking those that used our space to support positive birth such as Shari & others.

Thanking Gold Coast University Hospital for the collaboration & access agreement we had. Utilizing the hospital as needed allowed the continuity of care to our clients to be complete whether it was a planned birth centre or surgical birth or a transfer from home birth.

Thanking all of those in the background whom helped our service flow. Web master, photographers, student midwives, accountants, MIGA, BOC. Thanking those I have not mentioned.

Thanking our family and friends for your support, patience & understanding.

It’s been an incredible experience.

Farewell

Talitha & Maria

“We did it! He’s here!” Joyful smiles shine, laughter echoing accomplishment and I shake myself as I realize.. that was my last birth with My Own Midwife GC

How precious this moment is as Emma was one of the ealry women I served in birth as a private midwife and she is the final woman I serve in this chapter. It was also meaningful to have the support of Frankie from The Mustard Seed Midwife as no doubt we will have future collaboration. For now though Maria and I are winding down the business, settling all the post natal visits then…. Rest, holiday and off call!

In complete trust she birthed her baby at home.
As another surge rolled through her being I heard her sigh and say “it just feels so good”. Welcome the sensations were as it meant finally baby was on their way. At 40.6 weeks this pregnancy lasted a little longer than the previous 2 so the excitement was great.

In her lounge room she leant , rocked, crawled and breathed her baby down. At some point she asked if the grandparents could pick up the kids so she could totally surrender & be held to by her rock of a husband. She tired & I reminded her she had her whole home to utilize for the journey. Getting up, she moved into the shower where the warm water soothed, relaxed & revitalized her energy.

The babies heart rate was strong, stable and reassuring. She moved to her bed where her body expelled with power and she held onto her husband. The stretching came, a head emerged, a hand was by the neck and the cord so I gently manipulated a change as she birthed the baby completely into daddy’s hands & upon her chest.

Exhilaration and gratitude echoed in the room as baby sung his first breath into life. Mama laughed and celebrated “we did it! He is here!” Over & over this was her acknowledgment. Such a joy.

As she lay back upon her bed, baby suckled goodness from her breast & she released her placenta. The pregnancy was complete & the baby was finally here.

Morning sleep in with the family. After a Friday night of early labour and Saturday of strong contracting, this mamma & newborn take a rest to recover.

A gentle exit from the body this baby made, born within her sac filled with her warm clear amniotic fluid. This is a rare occurrence! Often waters release or hospital interventions disturb the physiology of the journey but not for this babe. Her parents were well informed and accepted their role to endure the birth sensations with complete trust in the process.

Returning home hours after their birth, the home now holds the attentive, caring vibe that family brings. Daddy is a constant solid source of support, mamma is softening into nurturance and doggy is gradually becoming familiar with the infant smells & noises. A beautiful new beginning. Well done family.

I said goodbye today to this family. What a journey it’s been and it continues to evolve in adorable, challenging ways.

It’s with gratitude that we all smile at the vibrant life this baby lives as moments after birth it seemed like life had almost slipped from her. The story goes…

After an intense “freight train ride” labour, mamma was on all fours in her bathroom where she birthed a healthy daughter. The new parents were elated to welcome their baby after achieving the homebirth they had intended. Mamma released her placenta whilst her baby breast fed. Maria and I checked between mammas legs then the new parents both looked. I looked at baby in mammas arms noticing she was suddenly limp and grey in colour. She’d been smothered into the breast. Immediately placing her on a firm surface I commenced CPR, whilst giving commands “call the Ambulance! Pass me the Neopuff! Mamma, call your baby’s spirit to be here!”. Each breath I gave I prayed that my action be what baby needed to continue her journey on earth. It seemed like a split second to me but an eternity for those witnessing but after 2 minutes of CPR, baby took a breath. Her colour returned and her eyes showed life. Returning her upon mammas chest I kept my eyes on each breath, supporting the dyad as needed.
We took a trip to the hospital where observation was made assuring all was well and continued to be.
So you see now 6 weeks on there is a sense of gratitude that runs deep.

Entering their home after a rushed midnight drive, I felt the energy of joyous achievement in the room and made effort not to disturb it. The courageous mama was sitting in pink colored water in the birthing pool, her gaze lovingly transfixed to the bright eyed babe in her arms. The birth had happened only 20mins after the father had called me - that was the moment mama had felt to first bare down! I put my bags down and surveyed the room - excited (now)dad by the pool, new grandmother gushing, birth photographer capturing what she can, my colleague arriving & the warm light of the Christmas tree.

Had I done my job right I queried to myself? I didn’t make it to the birth! As if reading my mind the new mama looked up to me smiling telling me “it was all perfect. We weren’t afraid, we felt totally prepared for whatever was coming and here he is. We are so grateful for the in depth discussions we had during our pregnancy with you as it gave us strength to trust and do what needed to be done”. So I had done what I was meant to do - I’d supported this couple to know their ability and be empowered by their journey.

After I supported the transition from water to land, birthing the placenta and observing the breast crawl their son made, I inwardly celebrated the gratitude I have to be providing private midwifery support. The Homebirth journey is so incredible.

On the 8th January at the lighthouse currumbin, our midwife Talitha will be offering a breast feeding awareness session to support an informed journey into breast feeding for mammas to be. Head to website www.meaghanamor.com.au to book your place. The feedback from previous participants has been very positive - their questions have been answered, the changes to their body have had reassuring light shone upon them and women have left feeling excited about breastfeeding rather than daunted. It’d be wonderful to see you there.
