The Laughter Clinic

The Laughter Clinic Hello, my name is Mark McConville. Since 1998 I have been working in the Australian entertainment industry as a professional Stand Up Comedian.

We specialise in positive mental health self-care strategies that are built around humour & laughter therapy for the treatment of stress, anxiety and depression. Along with making people laugh, which I have to say is the best job in the world, I'm now also working in the field of su***de prevention and research. In 2015 I completed a Graduate Certificate in Su***de Prevention Studies at Griffith University, and I'm currently studying a Masters Degree in Suicidology. My endeavour is to help reduce societal stress, depression and suicidality by means of promoting a direct link between the comedy industry and that of Mental Health. The Laughter Clinic Keynote Presentation and workshops can be specifically tailored to your organisations needs and desired outcomes. We are also aiming to conduct research into the Mental Health benefits of humour and laughter in order to help reduce stress, depression and suicidality.

LATEST PODCAST EP NOW LIVE !!
In this rich, wide-ranging conversation, Mark McConville sits down with Jodi Allen Nutrition—clinical nutritionist, trauma-sensitive yoga teacher, former member of the RAAF (14yrs), and lead facilitator of the 4 Aussie Heroes Foundation's Triumph Over Trauma program.

Jodi's story is extraordinary. She joined the Air Force at 17, suffered a spinal fusion at 24, stayed in service for another decade, and was eventually medically discharged—facing the devastating loss of identity that comes when the uniform is no longer yours. That journey led her through yoga, clinical nutrition, counselling, and ultimately to the frontlines of PTSD rehabilitation for veterans and first responders.

We cover SO much ground in this one:, If you know a veteran, first responder, or anyone working in a high-stress environment — share this episode with them. It could make a real difference.
PLUS: a special announcement at the end of the ep.

Here's a QUESTION: "When you're not watching the news, are you genuinely happier?" Latest Podcast Ep NOW LIVE...

Recently I had an experience that made me question everything about my relationship with news consumption.

I was at a social gathering with friends who were all discussing the news, and I had nothing meaningful to contribute. Not because I didn't care, but because I genuinely wasn't informed enough. In that moment, I felt disconnected and isolated from friends I usually feel close to and it led me to this question:
Is avoiding the news helping or hurting me?

It made me ask myself:
• Can I effectively support people's mental health if I'm blissfully unaware of what news stories might be triggering them?
• Does avoiding news negatively impact my ability to form meaningful connections with people?
• Do I have a civic duty to be an informed citizen?

But here's the other side: Research shows constant news consumption is harmful to our mental health. The media's negativity bias, the learned helplessness from knowing about problems we can't solve, the addiction to checking for updates... And now we have AI, deepfakes, and algorithms showing us what we want to see. Are we being informed or manipulated?

In this latest Laughter Clinic Podcast episode, I don't pretend to have all the answers. Instead, I explore both sides of this complex issue and share some practical strategies I'm personally testing.

"What if the root cause of disadvantage isn't a lack of money—it's a lack of love?" - John Godwin
In this weeks deeply moving podcast episode, I sit down with John Godwin, founder and CEO of Inspiring Brighter Futures Foundation for a conversation that will change how you think about mentoring.

This episode is essential listening for: Parents, educators, youth workers, mental health professionals, community leaders, HR professionals, potential mentors, and anyone who wants to make a difference in a young person's life.

John shares the story of how his organisation has grown to over 600 volunteer mentors across Queensland, working with at-risk youth, domestic violence survivors, ex-offenders, and long-term unemployed individuals through their evidence-based Onward and Upward program. The success stories are simply amazing.

The work of John and his team proves that when we lead with love, focus on values, and create genuine belonging, we can change lives.
Enjoy, wherever you get your podcasts from.
