A N X I E T Y & C O F F E E

“But first, coffee.”

This phrase is essentially the guiding philosophy for most 30+ year olds I know.

But is it a smart move for those with anxiety?

Some studies show that consuming more than 200 mg of caffeine (about the amount in just two cups of coffee) can increase the likelihood of anxiety and panic attacks in people sensitive to it.

So should you still cut back?

Not necessarily.

It’s a question of dosage.

Coffee absolutely picks you up, and it improves cognition and athletic performance.

But too much of most things backfires.

If you suffer with anxiety, cut back on the coffee for one week and log your symptoms each day.

If you feel better and your symptoms ease, it’s a no brainier.

When healthy eating becomes an unhealthy obsession.

While there is no category specific to Orthorexia, the disorder is in fact captured in the DSM-5.

Specifically, Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is a broad diagnostic category that holds Orthorexia as well as other eating or feeding disturbances.

Racing thoughts and overthinking is a hallmark symptoms of anxiety.

Racing thoughts can results in cognitive fatigue and brain fog,

which often makes people feel even more anxious than they did initially.

How do we break the cycle?

One technique is to develop a daily mindfulness practice.

Mindfulness is a skill and requires repetition in order for it to be effective.

Someone with high functioning anxiety may be the picture of success.

In many ways, their anxiety propels them forward.

They might arrive to work earlier than everyone else, impeccably dressed, with your hair neatly styled.

What others might not know is that beneath the surface of a seemingly perfect exterior, they’re fighting a constant churn of anxiety.

High-functioning anxiety is not considered a mental health diagnosis.

It's more commonly labelled as “mild anxiety” as the individual appears to be functioning pretty well.

Symptoms can still be problematic if they take away from their overall quality of life

Please speak to your GP and/or a registered psychologist if you're experiencing symptoms.
