Neurowild and Synergetic Play Therapy 🌈

NeuroWild 💕

It fills me with such joy to watch our kids happy stim.

Seeing happy jumps, spins, flaps.
Joyful singing, humming, movements.

It doesn’t matter if it looks different.
It doesn’t matter if it falls outside the realm of neuronormativity.

Unless a stim is harmful, you don’t need to redirect it.
Our stims are important. They’re useful.

Stopping a kid who is quietly stimming in a classroom is going to reduce their capacity to engage in learning. That’s an outcome that no one wants.

Rather that trying to stop the stimming, and rather than labeling it as ‘distracting’, teachers can help the whole class understand that different people learn in different ways.

For plenty of us, stimming helps us learn.

Let’s normalise that.
Yes?

WHY DECEMBER CAN BE TRICKY IN SCHOOL....

For many young people December can be tricky to manage with many changes in the usual school routine. Don't be surprised if after school restraint collapse is happening more often. Where possible ensure your routines at home are unaltered and that your young person has the opportunity to decompress.

IN THE RESOURCE STORE

AFTER SCHOOL RESTRAINT COLLAPSE PACK

I have extended this pack to include executive function and sensory processing checklists (can also inform an assessment process), a child explainer and activity - What is Tricky in School and a Masking explainer prompt.

Resource to support children and their families with after school restraint collapse. This pack includes explainers on An Introduction to Emotional Regulation, Co-Regulation, The Brain and Emotional Regulation, How Your Brain Keeps You Safe, Managing Meltdowns, The Survival Instinct, Creating a Calm Space, Reflection Upon an Incident, Using a Social Script and The Science of 3 Good Things. A 9 page social script can be personalised to the individual child and reinforces healthy habits after school to diffuse restraint collapse. Reflection tool to brainstorm events and adopt coping skills moving forward. Visual resources to capture emotions, stop and think as a prompt as well as calming skills visual prompt.
Useful tool for professionals working with parents also.

——TUESDAY TIPS——
Unlocking Emotions Through Playful Language😄

Children often communicate their thoughts and feelings through play rather than words. In play therapy sessions, we utilise specific phrases and approaches that create a safe space for children to express themselves freely.

Why Language Matters in Play Therapy

Build Trust: Show empathy and understanding.
Encourage Expression: Help them articulate emotions they might not fully understand.
Validate Feelings: Let them know it's okay to feel what they're feeling.

Below are some of the techniques we might use in a session:

Reflective Statements: Echoing what the child says to show you're listening.
Example: "You drew a stormy sky; it seems like things feel a bit heavy right now."
Open-Ended Questions: Inviting them to share more without pressure.
Example: "What does your character feel in this part of the story?"
Emotion Labeling: Helping them identify and name their feelings.
Example: "It looks like you might be feeling sad. Is that right?"
Narrative Building: Encouraging storytelling to express complex emotions.
Example: "Tell me more about this adventure your toy is going on."

Phrases Parents Can Start Using at Home

Why not try adding some of these techniques into your daily interactions to support your child's emotional growth:

"I notice you're feeling upset. I'm here if you want to talk about it."
Shows awareness and offers support without forcing conversation.
"What was the best part of your day? And what was the hardest?"
Encourages sharing of both positive and challenging experiences.
"It's okay to feel angry/sad/happy. All feelings are okay."
Validates their emotions, making them feel understood.
"Can you draw me a picture of how you're feeling?"
Provides an alternative way to express emotions through art.
"Let's play a game you choose."
Gives them control, which can empower them to open up.
How This Helps

Using these phrases:

Enhances Communication: Opens doors to conversations about feelings.
Builds Emotional Intelligence: Helps them recognise and manage emotions.
Strengthens Bonds: Creates a trusting relationship between you and your child.

Remember, the goal is to make your child feel heard and understood. By adopting these simple language techniques, you're providing them with tools to navigate their emotions effectively.

🧸🌈 Why Child-Led Play Therapy Outshines Traditional Methods

At Rainbow Connections Therapy, the mantra is simple: let the child lead. Child-led play therapy allows therapists to connect with children on a level that traditional therapies might miss. By observing and participating in play, therapists can reflect feelings back to the child and introduce self-regulation techniques, fostering growth and resilience.

Children often express themselves better through actions than words. Child-led play therapy taps into this, offering a nurturing space for kids to process their feelings through play. This contrasts with traditional therapies that may not fully engage a child's natural communication style.
