PTSD
According to estimates, at least two million veterans suffer from PTSD -- and only one in five of them has been diagnosed. Sadly, children and other noncombatants suffer from PTSD as well.

What is the definition of PTSD?

Post-traumatic stress disorder is a type of anxiety disorder that can arise when someone has gone through extreme emotional trauma that involves the threat of injury or death.

While PTSD is most often found among those who have served in the military, it can also affect those who have never been exposed to a war zone. Survivors of violent crime, natural disasters and other crises are all vulnerable to PTSD.

What are the Symptoms of PTSD?

In the face of danger, it is normal for humans to experience a “fight or flight” response. But with PTSD this response is hyperactive, leaving the person in a state of anxiety or fear even after danger has passed.

Besides constant fear and anxiety, other symptoms of PTSD include:

* overreactivity
* anger and hatred
* fatigue and difficulty sleeping
* flashbacks or bad dreams
* avoidance of certain people, places, or subjects
* restless legs
* emotional numbness
* feeling tense, edgy, or continually on guard

How is PTSD Usually Treated?

Treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder usually includes psychological and medical intervention. This typically involves various forms of counseling and the use of medication.

Can Essential Oils Help PTSD?

Fortunately, essential oils can do much to relieve those suffering from PTSD.

According to Gary Young, founder of Young Living Essential Oils, he has been having great success giving soldiers their lives back with essential oils.

The essential oil singles and blends Dr. Young has been using for this are:

Valor
Inner Child
Joy
Harmony
Lavender
Peace & Calming
Forgiveness
and Hope
There are other oils that have been used as well, including frankincense, Trauma Life, Release, RutaVala, and Tranquil.

The reason essential oils are so effective is because of their ability to pe*****te the limbic portion of the brain, which is the area that deals with memories and emotions.

From Dr. Young's experience, the most exciting result of his use of essential oils with soldiers is the dramatic way they are bringing hope to those suffering from PTSD... hope that they can experience a future that is free from the fear and anxiety of their past trauma.

Essential Oils for Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are a condition that is most commonly thought of in connection to pregnancy, although they can be caused by any rapid weight gain or loss.

Stretch marks appear due to the deeper fibres in the skin tearing when stretched. They initially appear as thin wavy red lines, gradually fading to white or silver. Although the appearance generally lessens over time, they do not disappear completely. So prevention in this case is definitely the preferable option, as, once the stretch marks have appeared, you options are very limited.

Preventing stretch marks in pregnancy means getting in early with treatment to help the skin to stretch and accommodate the growing baby, without the skin being damaged in the process. Apply a rich vegetable oil daily, not just to the stomach, but also the breasts buttocks and thighs, as these areas also expand during pregnancy. Try sweet almond or macadamia nut oils, adding some rosehip oil for its skin, regenerating properties or some wheatgerm for its vitamin E content.

You can also improve the effect of the oil by adding some essential oils to the mix. Of course you should take care if you are pregnant in choosing the essential oils to use. They should be safe for use in pregnancy as well as being good for the skin. The best oils are: lavender, mandarin, frankincense, geranium, patchouli or sandalwood. You can use a combination of these if you like, but keep the total amount of essential oil in the carrier oil to less than 30 drops for every 100ml of carrier oil.

It is a good idea to make up a bottle of the oil to last a few weeks at a time, rather than making up small amounts each day. (Try the Stretch Mark Oil Recipe below, or make your own combination.)

You should be starting to use your oil by the beginning of the second trimester, even if you are not “showing” yet, so that the skin as nice and supple before it needs to start stretching.

Be aware of any skin sensitivities you may have, or develop. If necessary use only a carrier oil, or use a lesser concentration of essential oils. Do this also if you are one of those whose develop a very sensitive sense of smell during pregnancy. You will be using this oil every day – you want to enjoy it!

Another tip is to continue to use the oil after the birth to keep skin supple whilst it settles back to its normal state.

Of course if you have any concerns about your health or your essential oil selection, please do see a qualified aromatherapist for advice and guidance.

Eucalyptus essential oil has many uses, and almost as many health benefits. Used appropriately and with care, eucalyptus oil can be an excellent addition to your alternative medications. It has a wide range of actions; being useful for muscle aches and pains, rheumatoid arthritis, and poor circulation; bronchitis, colds, coughs, sinusitis, sore throats, flu, and asthma; burns, blisters, cuts, insect bites, and as an insect repellent; as well as headaches and neuralgia.

CAUTION: Never take eucalyptus oil internally. Although eucalyptus is used as a flavoring ingredient in some cough drops, medications and foods; the pure essential oil is toxic in even small doses. In addition, it should not be used at all on anyone with high blood pressure, heart disease, or epilepsy; and should never be used by pregnant or breastfeeding women.

Eucalyptus oil should always be used diluted in a base oil like almond, coconut, or olive to prevent skin irritation; and should be kept away from eyes and mucus membranes. As long as these restrictions are followed, it is quite safe used externally. Although there are many possible uses, it is most effective for the following:

Eucalyptus Oil For Respiratory Problems
- Bronchitis: mixed at a rate of 10 drops of eucalyptus oil per tablespoon of carrier oil and rubbed on the chest over the lungs, it will ease coughing and help to break up chest congestion. It has an expectorant action, which makes it easier to cough up the mucus that causes it to be so difficult to breathe; and is an antispasmodic that will reduce non-productive coughing and ease the coughing “spasms.” In addition, it has antimicrobial action, which, combined with the expectorant action that clears the lungs of mucus, can help to prevent developing an infection with the bronchitis.

- Sinusitis: Using 5 drops of eucalyptus oil to a tablespoon of carrier oil rub a small amount over the sinuses to reduce congestion and the chance of developing an infection. When using in this area, apply very lightly, and keep it well away from the eyes.

- Colds and flu: In addition to the symptom relief listed above for bronchitis and sinusitis, eucalyptus essential oil helps to ease the aches and pains that come with colds and flu when the oil mixture is added to an epsom salt bath. Increase the amount of eucalyptus oil to 15 drops in a tablespoon of carrier oil, and add to a warm bath with two cups of epsom salt. (See the asthma warning at the end of the next paragraph before using this method.)

Another method of use for the respiratory problems listed above is to bring one and a half litres of water to a boil, pour into a heatproof bowl, and add three drops of eucalyptus essential oil. Keeping your face far enough away from the pot to prevent burning yourself with the steam, lean over the bowl and drape a large towel over your head and the bowl to create a “tent” that will hold in the steam. Breathe normally for up to 15 minutes, and repeat as needed.
This is excellent for getting the oil into direct contact with any bacteria or viruses in your lungs or sinuses and breaking up congestion. (If you have asthma, use this method with extreme caution, especially if you tend to react to strong scents. Keep your emergency inhaler close by in case it’s needed, and make sure there is someone with you the first time you try it. Sniff the eucalyptus oil while it’s still in the bottle to see if it is an irritant. If there is no reaction, you can try the steam, but have your “safety person” ready to take the steaming water out of the house if it triggers an asthma attack.)
