There is much to be improved about the NDIS. While the popular thing is to focus on rorts, waste and cost blow-outs, I am concerned that a scheme that is meant to help people in serious need of assistance continues to fail in some of its most basic tasks.
Of course the Agency (NDIA) needs to improve its response to unethical and illegal practices- no different to the tax office, or any other regulatory body. But it also needs to improve the experience of people who are eligible for services, and its relationship with registered providers like us who deliver these services.
Caringa Australia has worked to improve conditions for people with disability and their families for 7 decades. We lament the recent media focus on fraud and dishonest practices within the NDIS because it taints all persons living with disability, as well as workers and providers whose integrity is under question. A more balanced and respectful approach is needed that does not assume every person with disability and every provider is scamming the system.
The current focus deflects attention away from a scheme that continues to fail people like Vanessa, and people in our very own communities who live with complex impairments in a world that disables them from functioning.
Caringa Australia wishes our community a joyful and safe festive season. We look forward to serving the Coffs-Clarence region with supportive and empowering work that reduces barriers, increases inclusion, and celebrates diversity for the enjoyment of all our community.
Australians living with deafblindness can be at increased risk of developing mental health issues, but as Vanessa Vlajkovic discovered, communication issues and a lack of understanding make it difficult for them to get meaningful help.
