Device for Indicating Life in Buried Persons: a kind of burial periscope patented by J.G. Krichbaum, 5 Dec 1882.
"When the person has been buried a sufficiently long time to insure the certainty of death the apparatus may be removed by lifting box F and tubes D and C out of the outside casing, leaving the T-shaped tube B in the coffin, the slot in the lower end
of tube C allowing it to be withdrawn from its position on the cross pin b, whereupon the hole inside the outer casing may be covered or filled with earth and the surface leveled, and the device, or the parts left of the device, used upon another grave."

Our friends among the dead now live where time and space are transfigured. They behold us now in ways they never could have when they lived beside us on earth. Because they live near the source of destiny, their blessings for us are accurate and penetrating, offering a divine illumination not available according to the calculations of the given visible world. Perhaps one of the surprises of death will be a retrospective view of the lives we lived here and to see how our friends among the dead clothed us in weave after weave of blessing.

Making Choices That Matter: Advance Care Planning in Australia

Margaret sat at her kitchen table, flipping through a pile of papers. At 78, she was in good health, but she had seen too many friends fall ill without a plan in place. She thought about her best friend, Alan, who had suffered a stroke last year. His family had struggled to make medical decisions for him because no one knew what he wanted.

Determined to avoid that uncertainty, Margaret picked up the phone and called Moving On Support Services.

"Hi, I’ve heard about Advance Care Planning, but I’m not sure where to start," she said.

"That’s what we’re here for," replied Ajanta, a compassionate consultant. "Advance Care Planning is all about making sure your future healthcare wishes are known and respected. It allows you to document your preferences in case you ever become unable to communicate them yourself."

Margaret listened intently as Ajanta explained that an Advance Care Directive is a legal document outlining a person’s wishes regarding medical treatment. It also allows people to appoint a substitute decision-maker—someone they trust to make choices on their behalf if needed.

"I didn’t realise how important this is," Margaret admitted. "I want my family to know my wishes so they’re not left guessing."

"That’s exactly why National Advance Care Planning Week, from March 17-23, is so important," Ajanta said. "It’s the perfect time to start these conversations and put plans in place."

With guidance from Moving On Support Services, Margaret took the first step in securing her future care. She felt a sense of relief knowing that her choices would be honoured, and her family wouldn’t be burdened with difficult decisions.

Advance Care Planning is for everyone, regardless of age or health. This week is the ideal time to start the conversation. Moving On Support Services is here to help—because your future should be in your hands.
