What an absolute champion! ๐ŸŽ‰
Huge congratulations to our incredible supporter, Gary Meyers, who successfully completed his massive walk from Sydney to Griffith last week to launch our Staff Wellbeing Fund!
It wasn't easy! Gary battled aggressive flies and even got kicked off a highway, but he persevered and walked every step with that signature dedication he's famous for.
Gary, your commitment to "walking the talk" for our St. Vincent's Private Community Hospital Griffith staff is truly inspiring. A huge thank you for going above and beyond to ensure our 92 team members have the resources they need to take care of themselves. You're a legend!

Nine years ago today, on September 23, 2016, the keys to the building were handed over to St. Vincent's Private Community Hospital Griffith. This anniversary isn't just about a building or a date on the calendar; it's a celebration for our organisation, staff, VMOs, community and stakeholders to celebrate the success of our mission.
We were founded with a clear purpose: to enhance access to healthcare and provide greater choice for our regional community, all while upholding the values of our founding Sisters of Charity. We aimed to reduce the burden of travel, bringing timely, effective specialist care closer to home. Looking back, we've not only met these goals but exceeded them, becoming a vital part of the fabric of this community.โ€‹
This achievement belongs to all of us. It's in the quiet hum of our sterilising services, the warmth of our food services, and the careful attention of our environmental staff. It's in the seamless support from our supply and facilities teams, the expertise of our surgeons, and the compassionate hands of our nurses. It's also in our administration teams' shared commitment to delivering patient-centered care. Together, we've built a viable model of care, attracted talented people, and fostered a culture of learning and growth.โ€‹
As we celebrate this milestone, let's remember the impact we've made. We've helped people heal, โ€‹supported families, and built a stronger, healthier community. Letโ€™s continue to embody our โ€‹mission and build on the legacy we've created over the past nine years.

Walking from Sydney to Griffith is a massive undertaking, but for Gary Meyers, it's a way to give back. A heart attack survivor who "died twice" in 2018, Gary credits St. Vincent's Hospital in Sydney with saving his life. Now, he's taking on his next epic trek to support our incredible staff by raising money for the Staff Wellbeing Fund, an initiative dedicated to improving their mental health.
Since his recovery, Gary has become a relentless fundraiser, walking thousands of kilometres and raising over $87,000 for cardiac care. His motto is, "When you stare death in the face, nothing becomes scary anymore. You just want to make the most of life. There's no time to waste."
Let's support Gary and his incredible dedication! Click the link to follow his journey and donate to this vital cause, which is specifically designed to give our team the time, space, and resources they need to combat burnout and improve overall wellness.

At St Vincentโ€™s Hospital Melbourne, our Emergency Department includes a dedicated Mental Health and Alcohol and Other Drug (MHAOD) Hub - an integrated, specialist-led service providing immediate support to people in crisis.

This collaborative model brings together emergency clinicians, mental health specialists, and AOD teams to offer trauma-informed, person-centred care when itโ€™s needed most. โ€œWe see people from all walks of life and treat everyone with respect,โ€ says Emergency Nurse Olivia Bollington. โ€œWe listen and involve them in their care.โ€

The average length of stay for those attending the Hub is 40 per cent shorter than the average length of stay they would have experienced in our ED as part of the general mix of patients.

Itโ€™s part of a national St Vincentโ€™s commitment to caring for people experiencing mental health challenges, addiction, and disadvantage - across our hospitals, outreach teams and digital services.

This Pain Week, weโ€™re sharing the story of Navy veteran Ashley Semmens - who lived with chronic pain for over a decade after a bomb blast in Afghanistan.

With support from pain medicine specialist Dr Ramsey Jabbour at St Vincentโ€™s Private Hospital Northside, Ashley underwent a targeted treatment called radiofrequency ablation - and for the first time in years, found meaningful relief.

Ashley then went on to achieve a world-first: crossing the English Channel swimming on his back using only his legs.

His story is a powerful reminder that evidence-based pain care can transform lives.

For the first time, a targeted treatment for cholangiocarcinoma, otherwise known as bile duct cancer, is now listed on the PBS - offering real hope to Australians facing this aggressive disease.

St Vincentโ€™s Sydney Associate Professor Hao Wen Sim was involved in the clinical trials and says the results are significant: โ€œWeโ€™ve seen about a 50% reduction in the rate of death events, so quite a striking signal for this type of medication.โ€
