Today I worked on my own horse using the Medkey around the poll, and the reaction was BIG to start with — sensitive, fidgety, even a little overwhelmed (even tried to strike and bite me) But fast forward just 10 minutes… total release. Soft eye, lowered head, and fully accepting the treatment.
So what’s actually happening here? 👇
The poll is one of the most sensitive and important areas in a horse’s body. It’s where:
• The skull meets the first cervical vertebra (atlas)
• Major nerves pass through — including those influencing the face, ears, and parasympathetic (calming) responses
• Blood flow travels to and from the brain
When a horse reacts strongly to treatment here, it’s often because:
👉 There is stored tension, restriction, or discomfort
👉 The nervous system is on high alert
👉 There may be compensation from other areas (neck, back, even hind end!)
Using Medkey helps to:
⚡ Stimulate the nervous system
⚡ Improve circulation and lymphatic flow
⚡ Encourage release of tight or guarded tissue
That initial reaction you see? That’s the body “waking up” — becoming aware of an area that hasn’t been functioning properly.
And when the horse suddenly relaxes?
That’s the parasympathetic nervous system kicking in — rest, digest, release.
💡 Interesting facts about the poll:
• Poll tension can affect flexion, softness, and overall performance
• Issues here can contribute to head tossing, resistance, or even behavioural problems
• Releasing the poll can influence the whole body — not just the head and neck
This is why we always listen to the horse. The reaction isn’t “bad” — it’s information.
And the best part? Watching them let go and feel better right in front of you 🤍
