When talking to couples, I am often asked 💬 What’s the Monitum?

In Australia, it is legally required to say the Monitum before the couple say their legal vows. It’s not just tradition, it’s the law.

Under the Marriage Act 1961, every wedding ceremony in Australia must include this special little speech called the Monitum (Latin for “warning” or “advice”), for it to be legally recognised.

It must be said by an Authorised Celebrant, and it sounds like this:

“I am duly authorised by law to solemnise marriages according to law.

Before you are joined in marriage, I am to remind you of the solemn and binding nature of the relationship you are now about to enter.

Marriage, according to law in Australia, is the union of 2 people to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life.”

These 72 words may not sound very romantic but they are incredibly powerful. Without them, you’re not legally married, and they mark the moment where love becomes law. 💍

And this is why you hear it in every wedding ceremony. It’s how we make it official!

So, whether you’re eloping in a little white chapel or marrying in front of hundreds guests by the river, the Monitum will always be part of your ceremony.

✨ It was such a privilege to stand beside Gemma and Blake as they became husband and wife. Their ceremony was filled with love, laughter, and the most beautiful sense of calm that only true soulmates bring out in each other.

Wedding days are so special…And I got to be a part of it….I could pinch myself with happiness 🤗😆
This lovely couple were so easy to work with, and I felt so grateful being able to meet all of their guests and spend time with their loved ones. I’m honoured to be a part of their special day and wish the happy couple all the best for their love!
