I don’t know about you, but I had put this off for so many years. Well actually, I don’t know if I’d say put it off because for so long I didn’t really know that pelvic floor therapy was a thing.
Yes I knew of people who had had prolapses and of course I knew that they had some treatment done but it’s only been more recently that I’ve learnt the importance for all women to prioritise their pelvic floor other than just to do kegels not only as mothers whose pelvic floor has played a big part and pregnancy and birth but for all women it is in our absolute best interest to make sure that our perfect pelvic floor is in good order.
It took me a long time to book this appointment. I had felt a bit nervous and embarrassed about going in. Portia the therapist who saw me was so understanding of my feelings and totally put me at ease.
The session involved discussing any concerns I had talking through different aspects of my life such as toileting and how many previous births I had had and how long ago.
I was given a few different options for the assessment of my pelvic floor.
If you’ve ever had a Pap smear, this was nowhere near the discomfort, nothing like a Pap smear really!!
Exam didn’t take long and then we discussed the findings and next steps .
If you’ve had a baby either by va**na or by Caesarean or have any concerns about your pelvic floor I would encourage you to consider having a pelvic floor assessment.

Inviting somebody into your space when you are giving birth is no small thing. It is a time where you are vulnerable, skin exposed and you the only people that should be in that space are people who will offer a calm presence, complete trust in your capabilities, respect for your choices and understanding of your preferences.
What makes me the Doula that I am is -
• my deep passion to provide an emotionally safe space.
• unwavering support
• trauma informed care.
• remedial massage trained, specialising in pregnancy massage.
• the experience and understanding of pregnancy and birth after loss.
• Christian values.
• trust and belief in your body and it’s capabilities.
• women centred care
• family focused supporting and encouraging dad

Every week I speak with women who just don’t realise that they have choice in their birth.
Sometimes I’m talking with women who don’t realise that the tests, assessments, interventions and birth positions are all optional some they may want to have and others might not actually align with their own personal preferences.
That old saying you don’t know what you don’t know is so true. Especially when talking about birth which not only has become so medicalised but add to it everything we see on TV and it can be so confusing.
I think that’s where the true usefulness of having a Doula really comes through. It’s quite literally our jobs to make sure that you are well informed on your choices and your options. It is not our role to make any of those decisions for you but it is part of our job to make sure that you are understanding of the birthing process and that you’re not blindsided by anything of course we’re not genies and we can’t predict how everything is going to go but we aim to give you a great understanding of the process your body your options your choices and what to expect when birthing either at home or within the Hospital system.

Please get in touch if you feel you would like support. I would love to walk this journey with you.
