SPREAD THE WARMTH

What is homelessness:

A homeless person is an individual without permanent housing who may live on the streets; stay in a shelter, mission, single room occupancy facilities, abandoned building or vehicle; or in any other unstable or non-permanent situation. [Section 330 of the Public Health Service Act (42 U.S.C., 254b)]

People experiencing homelessness

On Census night in 2016, more than 116,000 people were estimated to be homeless in Australia—58% were male, 21% were aged 25–34 and 20% identified as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians (ABS 2018). Around 51,000 (44%) were living in severely crowded dwellings. Over 21,000 (18%) were living in supported accommodation for the homeless and 8,200 (7%) were sleeping rough.

WHAT is Spread the Warmth

🧤🧣This initiative was born from then 11 year old Elissa in 2020 who's passion to help kicked in after seeing one of the many homeless people in Perth.

The idea is simple, gather your winter gear and donate to one of the businesses/community groups with a collection box. We then collect and donate ensuring it is distributed directly to those in need.

Keep an eye out for collection points this winter.

As we start to warm up by our wood fires or under our warm blankets on the cooler nights, spare a thought for those who are homeless and don't have those luxuries.

It is estimated that over 9,000 people experienced homelessness every night in 2021.

While we may not be able to solve the issue of homelessness, there is always something that we can do.

We can all work together to

Today Elissa and her Dad are taking a car load full of winter clothes that have been generously donated.

Elissa was nominated for the 'Youth Citizen of the Year Award 2022' for the warmth

We are not sure who nominated Elissa, but we really do thank you!

It was an absolute privilege to be among the new Australian Citizens welcomed today and to celebrate the selfless contribution made by individuals and community groups to enrich the lives of others.

We are so thankful to ALL of the businesses that have supported and to ALL of the people who have donated items for those in need.

Thank you so much for working with us to to the homeless in Perth ❤

This week Elissa was invited by the Year 6 Social Justice Committee from Pickering Brook Primary School to talk to all students about Spread the Warmth

It is so great to see young students wanting to make a difference to those in need.

We would like to say a BIG thank you to Bunnings Warehouse Harrisdale for donating these amazing jackets to Spread the Warmth I can only imagine the difference a jacket this warm will make to someone living on the streets in this weather.

Today while Elissa was at school, I played pick up driver (with my mask 😷) and collected some very generous donations for Spread the Warmth ❤

We have another full car load of winter items to deliver to Uniting WA which will hopefully Spread the Warmth to those who need it most right now.
