I am officially on maternity leave! I am currently 38 weeks pregnant and taking some time to rest (as much as I can with a 3.5 year old) before our bub is here.

During this special period, my access to phone and email will be limited as I focus on our little family. I appreciate your understanding and support.

Does your child point to pictures when you are reading books with them? Do they label the pictures OR do they look to you to label them?

✨ Here is a simple tip to build your toddler’s expressive vocabulary while reading ✨

When need to remember that toddlers learn to imitate gestures and sounds BEFORE they can imitate words. Therefore, start there! For example, if they point to a baby crying you should pretend to cry (rubbing eyes with your hands and changing your facial expression) while making a vocalisation (“Waaaah waah”). Your child is going to be more likely to imitate these two things before they imitate words like “Crying”, “Sad” or “Baby”.

❗️Teaching your child to imitate gestures and sounds supports their expressive vocabulary development❗️

Today is Autism Awareness Day, recognised across the world!

To acknowledge this day, and create actionable change, ASPECT asked the autistic community:
1. What should people know?
2. What should people do or say to be helpful and supportive?

Here is a collection of responses:
▫️Autism looks different for everyone
▫️Fitting in can be exhausting
▫️I feel things deeply although I may not show it
▫️I am always listening but I might not always make eye contact
▫️Things may seem calm on the surface but underneath I am working so hard
▫️My strengths and interests are what drive and motivate me
▫️I’ve been wearing a mask my whole life

How to identify a swallowing disorder/swallowing difficulties:
1️⃣ Coughing while eating or drinking
