The recent Metro North Health Research Summit brought together leading healthcare professionals and researchers to share ideas, celebrate achievements, and inspire future innovation.

Hosted by Metro North Hospital and Health Service and proudly sponsored by the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital Foundation, the event featured thought-provoking talks from Dr Karl Kruszelnicki AM, Professor Grant McArthur AO (VCCC Alliance Chief Executive Officer) and the Director-General of Queensland Health, Dr David Rosengren.

The Summit concluded with the Metro North Research Excellence Awards, where we were delighted to see RBWH Foundation-funded recipients recognised for their dedication and impact on healthcare. Congratulations to all awardees - you are shaping the future of healthcare, and we’re proud to support your work!

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Thai Deng - an adored patient, generous donor and dear friend to the Foundation.

After facing his own health journey in 2019 with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML), a life-threatening cancer of the blood and bone marrow, Thai was referred to the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH), the largest in Australia, where a transplant saved his life.

With a caring spirit and deep determination to help others facing similar challenges, Thai and his beloved wife, Diamond, chose to support cancer research through the RBWH Foundation. Each of their donations included the number 177, a heartfelt tribute to Thai’s transplant date, 17 July.

For the past 3 years, Thai and Diamond have held a special thank-you celebration each year for Queensland Health Workers, inviting RBWH Cancer Care staff and Foundation staff as guests of honour and presenting their yearly donation. These annual events showed their gratitude and ongoing commitment to giving others hope.

We honour Thai’s memory, his generosity, and the lasting legacy he leaves in supporting research that saves lives.

Did you know that bananas are full of nutrients that help support energy, mood and overall health? 🍌

Yesterday was R U OK? Day - a national day of action dedicated to encouraging meaningful conversations about mental health. To acknowledge the day, the Foundation was proud to support Team Royal as they handed out bananas to patients and staff across the hospital, sparking conversations and reminding others that support is always available - not just on R U OK? Day, but every day.💛

Many patients in crisis come to the hospital without any personal clothing, often because of abusive situations or police investigations. Thanks to RBWH Foundation-funded programs like 'Discharge with Dignity,' the RBWH Emergency and Trauma Centre and Sexual Assault Response Team, work together to provide proper clothing to patients affected by sexual assault, domestic violence, and homelessness.

We'd like to thank Arana Leagues Club - Brisbane Queensland for choosing RBWH Foundation as one of the beneficiaries of their 2025 sports lunch, which raised an incredible $11,500 for the Discharge with Dignity program.

Attending on the Foundation’s behalf was Mark Cruickshank, A/Executive Director Allied Health Professions RBWH, who shared how providing patients with clean, fitted clothing not only helps them move around the hospital but also restores dignity and a sense of safety during a difficult time.

With support from the community, including Arana Leagues Club, the Discharge with Dignity program continues to give patients impacted by trauma, dignity and a sense of safety.

💛 Today is R U OK? Day – a reminder that reaching out today and any day can make a real difference.

Every year, around four million Australians experience mental illness, and almost one in seven young people live with a mental disorder.

RBWH Foundation artist-in-residence Nick Earls explores Professor James Scott’s latest research focus in this week’s chapter of 40 Strong Stories – the link between early onset psychosis and a young person’s childhood experience of violence and maltreatment.

We are proud to support Child and Youth Psychiatrist Professor James Scott, who is leading world-first research to better understand and treat severe mental illnesses, including psychosis, here at Royal Women’s and Brisbane Hospital (RBWH).

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the RBWH Foundation. For four decades, the Foundation has been the driving force behind world-class patient care, life-saving research, and healthcare innovation across the Herston Health Precinct - home to Australia’s largest hospital.

It was wonderful to recently meet some of the dedicated team behind this remarkable organisation and to attend the Foundation’s annual gala over the weekend. A truly special night in support of an outstanding cause!

Support RBWH Foundation to build a healthy future for Queensland

The RBWH Foundation exists to fill that funding gap. We raise funds to assist the hospital’s doctors, nurses, researchers and allied health professionals to achieve optimal patient outcomes by providing them with the knowledge, skills and technology which may not otherwise be afforded to them due to budgetary constraints.

Money raised by RBWH Foundation is used to fund research on the campus, purchase vital pieces of equipment and enable key health professionals to attend additional training programs, conferences and seminars. It contributes to our Patient Support programs and continuing to develop our Innovative Facilities.
