Not everyone is aware that sugar is added to ci******es, which increase their toxicity even more.

So when you give up this is some of the reason you experience feeling cranky or cravings. This doesn't mean it's a good idea to eat sugar when you give up, but ensuring you eat low GI food at meal times, or eating a low calorie lollie may help to calm down that craving. There are so many ways to bust cravings! You don't have to suffer through cold turkey

Very few smokers know there is sugar added to ci******es, a new survey suggests.

Let's talk about self-sabotage and limiting beliefs. I see it all the time. I have had to battle them myself in the past. You know that familiar yet unhelpful voice in your head that tells you that you can't do something, that you will be judged or scrutinized, or that you do not deserve good things. Sometimes that inner critic follows you around inside your head relentlessly hurling abuse at you constantly 24/7. You may be consciously aware that this is happening, but a lot of the time it is happening at a subconscious level.

-Ever wish you could do something but never seem to actually do it?
- Do you find fault in romantic partners if they treat you well? Do you sabotage relationships that could actually be good for you?
- Do you find that as soon as you get close to your goal you start to stuff things up for yourself?
- Do you find yourself getting depressed or anxious without actually knowing why?
-Do you rely on smoking, alcohol, or food to manage these painful feelings?

That brutal inner critic is like an unhelpful tape/ or mental program buzzing away and ensuring that you keep yourself small. Sometimes it can be because a parent didn't approve of your success.

There are a lot of ways to combat these painful emotions by targeting unhelpful subconscious programs. The first step though is to become aware of them. Next time you are having those feelings, Open up a notebook and write a "stream of consciousness". In other words, write down everything that comes into your mind without censoring it or judging it for 5 minutes. Now take a look at what you have written. Is it any wonder you feel the way you do?

Now write down what a good, kind friend would say in response to what you have written. In other words, if you have written " I am never going to be able to quit smoking because I am so weak-willed", you could write in response "It takes several attempts at quitting to be successful at it, and I am one step closer to my goal"

This can be a really powerful way to retrain your brain to think about yourself in more positive ways. It takes time, but it will eventually become automatic. Or, if you would like to fast-track the process you could book a hypnotherapy session by visiting my website at www.habitbusters.com.au or calling 0410573650 during business hours.

HELPFUL TIP FOR QUITTING SMOKING:

When some people think about meditation they imagine a monk sitting on a cushion for hours. Or perhaps you have tried it and couldn't keep your mind still so you gave up.

Did you know that every time you go out for a smoke and you sit and watch your surroundings taking deep breaths, watching the smoke go out of your mouth and focusing on the present moment you are meditating? Which is great in some ways because meditation has been shown to have a huge amount of benefits including lowering anxiety, stress levels, increasing reaction time, improving immunity... the list goes on. The only problem is while your are smoking you are also killing yourself slowly at the same time. Sometimes when people quit smoking they get irritable and I believe that some of that is because they have suddenly quit regular short meditation breaks.

What I do is go out for regular 5 minute breathing breaks. Where possible I set my alarm to remind myself to do it and time my breaks. Every hour is perfect if your schedule allows. If you are quitting smoking and you found time to smoke then you can easily replace this time with your mindful breathing breaks. Focusing on all your surroundings, noticing your breath, taking deep breaths, relaxing your shoulders. Noticing 5 things you can see, 4 things you can hear, 3 things you can feel, 2 things you can smell and one thing you can taste.

If you do this regularly throughout the day you will feel so much better. If you do this instead of smoking the results will be amplified!

Some signs of addiction to a substance or a behaviour are:

- Needing more of the substance to get the same buzz
- Obsessing about it and planning your life around it (eg. choosing to stay home and smoke or drink rather than go out somewhere pleasant where you can't smoke or drink)
-Experiencing uncomfortable psychological or physical withdrawals.
-Feeling guilt or shame about your behaviour. Hiding the smokes or alcohol or lying about how much you have had
- Continuing to use despite the negative effects it has on your health or wellbeing
-Feeling like it controls you rather than the other way around

Can you relate to any of these?

Many people have so many compelling reasons to stop smoking but still find it very difficult to quit. This is because they still believe that smoking helps them to feel calm, to focus or they find they suffer from very uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms when they stop. This is why, when you quit it is so important to replace the habit with another behaviour that achieves the same desired emotional or feeling state.

The great thing about hypnosis is that it can help you to attach this feeling state to a new behaviour. I can help you to achieve a deep state of relaxation simply by taking a sip of water, or taking some deep breaths.

Doing regular deep diaphragmatic breathing is so important when quitting smoking. This breathing style activates your parasympathetic nervous system, helping you to feel calmer. Often when we are anxious or craving we take shallow breaths without realizing we're doing it. Shallow breathing can make us feel more anxious, and the only time we take deeper breaths is while smoking. The cigarette then gets the credit for the relaxation that is actually created by the deep breathing. Here's a video demonstrating this breathing technique https://youtu.be/kgTL5G1ibIo

In this video, Whitney Zweeres, PTA teaches the diaphragmatic breathing technique. This technique can be used for pain management, relaxation, and the relief...

Sometimes when people quit smoking they find that they are experiencing emotions such as irritability, anger or sadness. The good news is that hypnotherapy can significantly help with this.

What causes these emotions? Ni****ne withdrawal ususally gets 100% of the blame. But is it really ni****ne that causes you to feel irritable when you quit? I think that it is more to do with how you have been coping with these emotions for the past 20, 30, 40 or more years that you have been smoking. If every time you felt annoyed at someone you went for a smoke then you never really learn to sit with, or process this emotion. So when you quit you my find that emotions are coming up and you are actually having to feel them/ process them for the first time in years. This may feel uncomfortable at first, but this discomfort is temporary.

The great news is that using hypnotherapy and EMDR I can help you to significantly reduce or eliminate these uncomfortable feelings, while still processing and dealing with them.

And I think the core of that message -- you're not alone, we love you -- has to be at every level of how we respond to addicts, socially, politically and individually. For 100 years now, we've been singing war songs about addicts. I think all along we should have been singing love songs to them, because the opposite of addiction is not sobriety. The opposite of addiction is connection.
