Emotional regulation is the brain’s ability to notice emotions, understand them, and choose actions that support healthy responses. This skill begins in early childhood through co-regulation, when parents and trusted adults help a child feel safe, soothed, and supported. It continues to develop throughout childhood, adolescence, and into adulthood, shaping how we handle challenges and stay engaged in daily life.
Emotional regulation is more than managing feelings, it directly affects how a child functions every day. It’s not a skill we’re born with, and children with autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, anxiety, early childhood trauma, or other developmental needs may find it especially challenging.

Emotions influence a child’s ability to focus, solve problems, interact socially, complete self-care tasks, and participate in activities that are meaningful or expected of them. When regulation is difficult, children may experience meltdowns, increased anxiety, or challenges at home and school. These struggles can disrupt routines, relationships, and overall participation in daily life.

Occupational therapists look at the underlying factors that shape emotional responses, such as sensory processing, environmental demands, habits, energy levels, and a child’s awareness of their own body and feelings. At Compass Rehab, our therapists work alongside your child to support their individual needs and help them build the emotional competence they need to thrive.
