Kelly Wilkinson was turned away from Southport police station and told to ‘cool off, give Brian a break’ while seeking help just four days before her estranged husband, Brian Earl Johnston, burned her to death in 2021, an inquest has heard.

The allegation was made in an extraordinary 11th-hour submission by the lawyer acting for her family as they applied to adjourn the coronial inquiry to hear additional evidence about the allegation.

Mitch Rawlings, acting on behalf of the family, said Queensland police’s claim that 12 April 2021 was the last time Wilkinson engaged with police was false.

Well done! Justice for DFV victims 🙌🙌

Queensland Law Society is pleased to see the State Government deliver on its commitment to improve court facilities for victim-survivors of domestic and family violence (DFV).

The $5 million upgrade to the Maroochydore Courthouse will boost security at the main entry and construct a new safe room with direct access to court. This will give vulnerable witnesses private, secure spaces to prepare and attend proceedings.

The Society’s Call to Parties advocacy statement ahead of the 2024 state election called for increased security measures to improve the court experience of those dealing with DFV matters.
