We are sending our love and regards today to Professor Richard Scolyer, who continues to share publically the challenges he is facing as he lives with his Glioblastoma (Brain Cancer) illness, treatment and contribution to medical scientific research and knowledge, in the hope, one day, of understanding how to help people battle this cancer.
Palhelp is here to support people, in Southern Tasmania, with a palliative illness, through companionship, life stories biography work and assistance with Advance Care Planning.

Grief can’t be fixed. We don’t ’get over it’. We live with it and learn to carry on. Some days grief will rise up to engulf you and that’s ok. It’s about living whilst acknowledging our grief.

Last Friday it was my great pleasure and privilege to attend the first PCT organised Gathering for Grief event. Thank you to Palliative Care Tasmania for setting up this rather special, compassionate event and thank you to the people who trusted me with their grief stories on the day. I hope you found some comfort and connection with others. I was amazed how things sometimes coincide but it is perhaps not surprising in this 60th anniversary year, that people were sharing their experiences and memories of the terrible bushfires that destroyed so many homes, and took such a heavy toll of lives. I was in the ‘yarning’ corner, literally spinning yarns, which prompted one gentleman to think of his mother weaving replacement curtains for a new home, on a loom he made for her from salvaged Huon pine. These are the threads that bring us together.

The stories of your life matter! Looking back through those photo albums brings back such powerful memories. Our volunteer-led life-stories biography service is available now and totally free of charge! Our lovely biographers are waiting to hear and record your stories to help families in Hobart and Southern Tasmania preserve memories for future generations. Our biographers will meet with people living with a life-limiting illness to gently record favourite stories, recollections and messages for grandchildren, partners and close family. These recordings complement companion visits and advance care planning by capturing the person’s voice, values and legacy in a practical, lasting way.

If you or someone you love has a life-limiting illness like MND, cancer or a chronic heart condition and would like to learn more, or if you’re a GP, allied health professional or community member who could refer someone, please get in touch. This service is volunteer-delivered, local and offered at no cost to families.

Such a lovely, gentle gathering planned on Feb 20th at Kickstart Arts. I’ll be there, with my spinning wheel listening to the music and ready to ‘yarn’ with anyone who’d like to join me. Come along to share the vibe.

We’re really pleased to have Mark joining us for Gathering for Grief.

Mark Bandick is a guitarist and vocalist from the Huon Valley, with a long-standing love of bluegrass music. He founded and played with The Cherry Pickers for over 20 years, and is currently part of the much-loved Tasmanian group WolfeFolk.

We’re grateful he’ll be sharing his music with us as part of this gathering. 🎶🧡

We’d love you to join us on the day:https://ap1.hubs.ly/y0zPS-0

'I was unwell, depressed, and very lonely. My Volunteer Katie's visits are the highlight of my week. She is so wonderful. We are so alike in our interests and backgrounds. We talk and laugh nonstop for the two hours we spend together. My doctors have made medication changes which have improved my physical health slightly, but Palhelp has greatly improved my mental health. I am still housebound and mainly confined to my chair and bed, and my only real visitor is Katie, but now I laugh a lot, and feel happy, and enjoy so much around me much more. And yes, I feel connected! I am so pleased I found Hospice Visitors when I was really at my lowest. Thank you 😁’
When Mary began receiving weekly volunteer visits through Palhelp, her days changed. A palhelp volunteer began visiting her on Tuesday afternoons; she enjoyed her afternoon cuppa much more, as they swapped stories and shared a few laughs together. Her volunteer helped with small errands and the two hours flew by— giving Maria company, practical support and renewed interest in life. Her family, who live interstate, say the visits eased their worry. Palhelp’s compassionate, no-cost volunteer companionship supports people with life-limiting conditions across Hobart and surrounds.
