In very remote Australia, life expectancy is around 12 to 13 years shorter than in metropolitan areas for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.
This is not just a number. It represents decades of lost stories, shortened futures, and communities carrying a heavier burden of illness and preventable disease.
The causes are complex: limited access to healthcare, fewer specialists, higher rates of chronic conditions, and social factors that make staying well much harder outside the cities.
Closing this gap is not optional. It is essential if we are to build a fairer, healthier Australia. Every person, no matter where they live, deserves the same chance at a long and healthy life.
