Let’s talk about California poppy and sleep! 💤

California poppy has been traditionally used in Western herbal medicine for its pain-relieving properties and to promote sleep without the disadvantages of potential additive effects. It achieves its sleep-inducing effects by stimulating your body’s production of gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA), which is a calming neurotransmitter (brain chemical) produced by your brain, GABA sends signals among your brain cells that reduce their activity. A great antidote for times where you feel too stimulated or stressed to sleep.

California poppy can be utilised amongst other herbal remedies if you are struggling to feel sleepy or stay asleep. A Healthcare Practitioner can help choose the right herbal combination for you, taking into consideration your health history and any medications you may be using.

📣📣Calling all Naturopathic and Complementary Medicine Practitioners!📣📣

Researchers from the University of Sydney, the University of Technology (Sydney), the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine and the National University of Natural Medicine (Portland, Oregon) have come together to establish the COVID-19 Naturopathic Support Clinical Registry.

The purpose of this registry is to collect de-identified cases who have been supported through exposure or prevention of COVID-19, in order to report contributions by Naturopaths to this pandemic, and provide data to generate hypotheses regarding potential treatments and protocols.

An open letter to global Naturopaths, explaining the register can be found here:https://cdn.ymaws.com/naturopathic.org/resource/resmgr/documents/covid19/nunm_registry_faq.pdf

The registry itself is a simple questionnaire, and can be found here: https://redcap.nunm.edu/redcap/surveys/?s=YXELDDCEEF

Questions regarding the registry can be directed to Ryan Bradley, ND, MPH at rbradley@nunm.eduand the NUNM privacy policy is here: https://nunm.edu/privacy/

If you are in the midst of a treatment plan you can simply enter the information you have available and will be issued with a Survey Access Code to return at any time to update the record.

Now is the time for us to come together as a global community and create a knowledge bank to further the Naturopathic profession and the value that it brings!☺️

Back in the 80’s low fat diets became the ultimate diet for health....except that they actually lead to a huge increase in the development of Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM)! Why? Because they replaced the fats with carbohydrates, aka sugars, which ultimately lead to fatty liver, insulin resistance and a bunch of other consequences that are all part of metabolic syndrome and it’s counterpart - T2DM.
Bottom line is we all need fats in our diet, what we don’t need are foods that are overly refined and contain fats with excessive sugars or salt; ‘foods’ that contain little to nought beneficial nutritional status including donuts, potato crisps, and many other overly refined ‘foods’. Just. Eat. Real. Food.

Everyone knows saturated fats - the ones that come in chips and cookies and cake - are bad. But is it the fats themselves that are bad?

Plastic is one of the common topics I speak with all clients about. One such component of plastics is Bisphenol A or BPA which has been highlighted as being a major endocrine (hormone system) disruptor. BPA is only one chemical found in plastics that has the ability to ‘behave’ like estrogen in the body, only that this is more like ‘frankenestrogen’, with undesirable effects. One of the worst offenders is bottled water.
Ideally, it time to clear your cupboards of all plastic, each time you you replace an item, choose a safer, more sustainable material such as stainless steel or glass.

Some studies show the new BPA-free plastics are still potent endocrine disruptors; some even worse than BPA itself. So how do you keep BPA and other plasticizer toxins out of your body?
