I came to this work because I am passionate about helping people to be healthy and happy. Practising as a naturopath means helping my patients to develop their knowledge and understanding about their bodies (and sometimes health conditions), and guiding them to make the lifestyle and dietary shifts that will be beneficial for their long-term wellbeing. Additionally, we may use herbal and nutritional medicines to support treatment if required. I am especially interested in helping women and people with ovaries to feel heard, and like their health and wellbeing matters, no matter how big or small the issue. For example:
• Irregular periods and painful menstruation
• PCOS and weight issues
• Endomentriosis and Adenomyosis
• Menopause
• Fertility issues (female and male)
• Optimising health for positive pregnancy outcomes
• Supporting parents to raise healthy children

A couple of weeks ago survey results from the Victorian government’s inquiry into women’s pain were released. ❤️‍🩹

We love that increased access to allied health and support was highlighted as a recommendation.

As was access to the green whistle for IUD insertions. 💚

Get the most out of your pathology results. 🧪🩸

Main take-home: know why you’re getting them done, if you don’t know why, ask.

Note: there are many tests where fasting doesn’t matter such as serology (immunity) tests, and genetic tests. 🧬 But being non-fasted will have some effect on most other types of tests like E/LFT, sugars, nutrients, and hormones. 🩸

I came across this interesting article in The Guardian today. It shared some insights from research across a number of universities between the 80s and now. 🧐

The studies all explore correlation between extinction in the environment around us and changes to our inner ecosystem – the microbiome. 🐛

The focus areas of each bit of research are different, but essentially what is being found is the less exposure to nature we have, the higher likelihood of health issues including allergies and autoimmune diseases. 🤧 🦠

Fascinatingly, one study even showed improvements in the participants microbiome within weeks of tending a garden. 🪴

I think in the decades to come, as we all begin to live much more urban, technology dependant lives, considering our lifestyle and dietary choices will be more important than ever. 🍎🌳🍃

Happy herbal medicine week! 🌿 Hard for me to pick a favourite herb because I love them all. 😂

But one of my favourites has to be green tea. As a herbal extract it’s a wonderful anti microbial that I use in the vaginal health space a lot. 😻

But it’s also amazing for:
🍵 Gut health
🍵 Brain health
🍵 Soothing inflamed throats
🍵 Sickness
🍵 Anti-ageing

And many, many more. It’s full of antioxidants and rich in polyphenols (which is why it is AMAZING for gut health 🤩)

The best bit is that you can incorporate it into your everyday routine easily and cheaply.

Tips for a tastier brew:
🍵 Brew with water slightly off the boil, around 80 degrees will help the flavour to be less bitter.
🍵 Choose a high quality, organic tea for better flavour. I 💚 Organic green tea.

(And I also obviously 💚 Green Tea herbal extract 😉)

Cycle charting isn’t just about contraception or conceiving. 💊

It’s a powerful tool for body literacy. 💪Positioned that way, I believe it is both a valuable and valid thing to consider teaching our young people. 🫶

Knowing what is happening in their bodies from the start can help to build confidence and trust, and make menstruation less scary. 🩸

It also helps young people to more quickly identify if something is wrong, meaning they might get help sooner. 👩‍⚕️

This is exactly why I put together Grow Girls and feel excited about increasing the reach of cycle education.

It’s really great to see this being talked about in mainstream media. 📰

Infertility is rarely about just one thing. Most of the time, it's a constellation of factors contributing to poor health. And ultimately, infertility is a side effect of poor health, in one way or another. 🤒

The matter of the fact is, we actually need to be in really good health to pass on undamaged DNA (our eggs and s***m), and to sustain a pregnancy, because it is a BIG process. 💥

The tricky thing is, is that the human body is so resilient, that even when we are quite unhealthy, we can still get by and feel okay. 🤔

But there can be A LOT going on under the surface. ⛏️

Which can mean that infertility can feel like this elusive mystery. But under the surface, because your body is under stress, you might not be:

🐣 Ovulating regularly - you can have a regular bleed/period without ovulating
🐣 Producing sufficient progesterone to support implantation
🐣 Digesting your food properly and getting the nutrients needed to support pregnancy.

And that's just it. Nutrition. Fertility diets. Lists of foods to support fertility... It isn't coincidence that the foods that support fertility actually support good health too. 🥕🍎🥬🥑🫐🥝

Convenience and processed foods are here to stay now, and yes I do believe in them being a handy tool to reduce stress, but the reality is that overuse of them is resulting in a lot of us missing out on antioxidants and nutrients that support our wellbeing. 💚

Supplements can definitely be a helpful tool here, as it can be difficult to obtain high amounts of some nutrients from foods in our day-to-day lifestyle. But they were never supposed to replace our diet.

I digress. Supporting your fertility can (and possibly should) be so much more than popping a prenatal vitamin, hoping for the best and planning to use IVF if all else fails (spoiler alert 🚨 nutrition is crucial for IVF success too).

Far too many women are still suffering preventable illnesses and conditions. ❤️‍🩹 This could be reduced if we spent more time listening to and believing these women’s truths rather than dismissing.

There's been a lot of noise (and drama) around the pill being classed as a group 1 carcinogen by the WHO. 🍿

Many of you would think because I am a naturopath, surely I would agree, right? Nope. 🙅‍♀️

Yes, I think the pill is often used inappropriately to disguise symptoms of other reproductive conditions warranting investigation. Yes, I do think there could be health risks associated with suppressing ovulation long term. BUT, it can actually be very appropriate for use as a contraceptive for some people. 💊

Are there no cancer risks? Again, no. The studies behind the statement the WHO has made (a long time ago, in the 2000s - this isn't new news, just recycled in the media really) suggest an increased risk of breast cancer and cervical cancer, but a decreased risk of ovarian and endometrial cancer due to lack of ovulatory cycles. The risk also decreases once you stop the pill.

The main reason the ingredients in the pill are considered to be carcinogenic is thought to be due to the way the hormones break down in the body combined with unique genetic and lifestyle factors.

However, cancer risk is actually very very complex, because every person's genetics are different, as are often their dietary and lifestyle associated risk factors. The amount of time the pill is used over the lifetime also contributes to your risk. 📈

The bottom line is, whilst good clickbait, I don't think everyone needs to fear the pill particularly if it is an important part of your current contraception strategy. 💏

The development of the pill has revolutionised women's ability to have choice over aspects of their lives such as their career by having greater control over when they have children. It isn't to say there aren't other methods (I teach fertility awareness), but sometimes the pill will be the best option for a period of time.

In my practice I often work with people who are using the pill. We sometimes discuss genetics, but most often we look at how they can support their body to clear the excess hormones via their liver and gut. This is often the really simple, boring and overlooked stuff like eating plenty of fibre, and especially cabbage/broccoli family veggies. 🥦

This week I've been reminded of the important role screening for vaginal microbiome imbalances in preconception care. 🦠🐱🤰

A few of my treatment plans have featured treatment of BV associated bacteria, which when left or turn into an active infection during pregnancy can lead to preterm birth and potentially complications in newborns. 👶

Levels of investigation vary from a culture swab through your GP through to comprehensive microbiome screening which I can help you order in clinic. 🧪

I know a lot of my followers are endo girlies or pelvic pain sufferers and today, being day one for me I wanted to share a practice I have started to use myself to help de-escalate how bad I sometimes feel when I'm in pain. 🩸😣

Yes, there are lots of things that can contribute to the development and even the worsening of pain, but as anyone in thick of it would know, it is always a work in progress, and often not linear.

This simple mantra is one I got from Healing Pelvic Pain, by Peta Wright and I love it.

It doesn't make the pain go away like some of the other things I have in my tool kit, but it really helps to manage my mood, my expectations, and how I am able to navigate my day.

Finding internal body safety by turning toward yourself and showing yourself compassion can really help. It's like a mental hug. In fact I sometimes even hug myself while repeating the words in my head. 💗

I'm curious to know, have you ever tried affirmation, mantra, or self compassion for pain? Not as a replacement for other tools, but to help them work better. Let me know. 🌝

My story

I am a Remedial Massage Therapist. I believe massage as an alternative therapy can be used to alleviate and provide relief from physical and mental stress, and injury; I find it is also complimentary to many other modalities of primary health.
