Congratulations to Head of the Transplant Dermatology Clinic, A/Prof Alvin Chong, Dr Edward Upjohn and colleagues on having their paper ‘Nicotinamide for Skin-Cancer Chemoprevention in Transplant Recipients’ published in the March edition of The New England Journal of Medicine.

Immunosuppressed organ-transplant recipients have an increased incidence of, and mortality from, skin cancer. In this 12-month, placebo-controlled trial, oral nicotinamide therapy did not lead to lower numbers of keratinocyte cancers or actinic keratoses in immunosuppressed solid-organ transplant recipients.

Well done to Assoc. Prof. Alvin Chong and the Transplant Dermatology Team @ Skin Health Institute for their important paper.

Congratulations to the SHI Transplant Dermatology Team on having their paper
“A long-term cohort study of acitretin for prevention of keratinocyte carcinoma in solid organ transplant recipients” published in the Australasian Journal of Dermatology (2022).

Organ transplant recipients in Australia are at an increased risk of developing keratinocyte cancers of the skin due to immunosuppression. In this retrospective cohort study, the authors found that a low-dose of oral acitretin, a type of retinoid, significantly reduced the rate of developing skin cancers in organ transplant recipients by at least 50% over a five-year period.
Moreover, the treatment was well-tolerated. Oral acitretin is hence a useful medication that can be considered in organ transplant recipients who are developing multiple skin cancers.
