We still get people asking us for ashwagandha, so I wanted to explain why we no longer sell it as a tea ingredient.

Ashwagandha is one of those herbs many people know, love and actively look for, so it can be confusing when a small apothecary business says, “Sorry, we can’t sell that.”

What changed?

In 2023, ashwagandha was classed by FSANZ as a novel food in Australia.

That means it is not approved as a normal food ingredient and can’t simply be sold in loose teas, herbal blends, drink mixes or food-style products.

It may still appear in listed complementary medicines, but that is a different regulatory category to selling it as tea.

So yes, people still ask us for it.

And yes, we would love to be able to offer it.

But once we found out it wasn’t permitted as a normal food ingredient, we removed it from our tea range because we had to do the right thing legally.

This is why the current moringa petition matters.

A herb can be traditional, well known and used by communities for generations, but that does not automatically mean a small Australian business can legally sell it as food or tea.

Most people have no idea how complicated this is behind the scenes.

Moringa has quietly been blocked from being sold as a food in Australia, and I don’t think most people realise what that actually means.
This isn’t because moringa has suddenly been proven dangerous.
From what I can see, FSANZ rejected the application because they said there wasn’t enough safety evidence provided to approve it as a “novel food” under Australian and New Zealand food law.
That might sound like a small technical issue, but the real-world impact is huge.
Moringa has been used as a traditional food by many communities for generations, especially in South Asian cooking where the leaves and pods are part of everyday meals.
It also affects Australian growers who have invested time, care and money into growing moringa, only to now be told it can’t be sold as food.
The petition is asking for this decision to be reviewed and for moringa to be made legal again for food use.
I’m sharing because I think people should know what’s happening and have the chance to sign if they agree.
