A Kadina art attraction has been overshadowed by a new commercial development that blocks it from view.

The Kadina Water Tower mural is no longer visible to traffic on the Copper Coast Highway after the cement walls of two bulky goods outlets were erected in recent weeks.

The outlets are also joined by a KFC restaurant, located on land opposite Aldi.

Barunga West Council chief executive Maree Wauchope has resigned to take up a role with the SA Housing Trust.

Her resignation will be effective as of October 31.

Ms Wauchope returned to work at the council six weeks ago after 10 months of medical leave for melanoma treatment.

Stop approving new fossil fuel facilities and spend half a billion dollars per year on marine restoration over the next decade.

That was the advice of ecologist Faith Coleman in her written submission to the federal Senate's algal bloom inquiry committee, which visited Ardrossan last week to hear from those affected, including oyster growers, fishers, local government, First Nations peoples and community groups.

Ms Coleman also spoke at the hearing, with Liberal senator Leah Blyth saying "I think I've probably learnt more from you today than we have from the panel of scientists from the state government".

Barunga West Council has resumed development of industrial land on Hornby Road, progressing plans to deliver fully serviced allotments for local and regional businesses.

Last week, council staff commenced levelling the site — the first step towards connecting the land to power and constructing access roads.

On her first day back from extended leave, chief executive Maree Wauchope approved $157,000 in works to link the estate to high-voltage infrastructure along the highway.

Excitement is building ahead of the 2025 Yorke Peninsula Field Days, with president Greg Stevens highlighting the event’s major economic impact on the region.

Running from September 30 to October 2 at the Paskeville site, the biennial field days is the largest event held on Yorke Peninsula.

Mr Stevens said it generates between $5 and $8 million through accommodation, food, fuel, exhibitor site fees and other local spending.

A senior Barunga West Council executive has joined the council's chief executive in urging people to protect their skin and get regular checks for skin cancer.

Director of development and regulatory services Trevor White returned to work in late August, after medical leave following major surgery and skin cancer treatment.

His recovery came as chief executive Maree Wauchope was also receiving treatment (see YPCT 26-8-25).

The Copper Coast Motorsports Sand Drags event was held in Wallaroo for the second consecutive year on Saturday and Sunday, September 6-7, drawing huge crowds across two days.

More than 3000 people attended the venue across the weekend, with Sunday’s event offering a popular outing for Father’s Day.

There were 99 competitors — up from 71 in 2024 — and once again proved to be an overwhelming success.

Yorke Peninsula’s games and pop culture convention, YorKON, is set to return in 2025.

The free, family-friendly event will be held at Minlaton Town Hall on October 10 and 11, during the October school holidays.

YorKON will again feature retro and modern games, arcade machines, tabletop gaming, cosplay, workshops and collector displays.

Copper Coast Council has begun community engagement for its 30-year growth strategy, a plan to guide development, infrastructure and investment as the region prepares for major population growth.

The strategy will set clear expectations for residents, businesses, investors and government, ensuring the council is positioned to manage growth in its key service centres.

Early population modelling shows the Copper Coast could almost double to 30,000 residents by 2051.
