Dear mama 🤰🏻

I know you’ve heard all the usual lines - “congrats!”, “what a gift!”, “you must be thrilled”

While all of those are likely true, that doesn’t take away from the fact that being pregnant is a bloody tough gig. Why doesn’t anyone mention the haemorrhoids, the sleepless nights, the cankles, the backaches, the unending nausea, the food aversions, the ever-growing belly that just seems to expand every day? I feel like we definitely weren’t warned about half these fun side effects…

But I digress. Given how tough pregnancy can be on your body, make sure you’re taking care of yourself first. Yes, that means resting as much as you can (tricky if you also have a toddler to take care of, I know), gentle movement that feels good, decreasing your workload, and focusing on good nutrition where you can.

Pregnancy takes such a huge toll on your body, so flooding it with the right nutrients ensures that you have enough energy to get through each day, prepare your body for birth, and support your growing babe.

Even though it doesn’t feel like it right now, this season won’t last forever, I promise. Do what you can to get by, and if in doubt, get help - whether that’s hands-on help around the house, extra childcare for your babe, or expert guidance in pregnancy health. It won’t be long til babe’s earthside and in your arms, and you’ll miss feeling their little kicks.

You got this, mama. Big love, Amy x

What’s the big deal about protein? It’s such an essential macronutrient, especially after you’ve had a baby! It has three main roles in your body in the postpartum period:

✨ It enriches your breastmilk, to supply your baby with protein (aka the building blocks to all the cells in their body - pretty cool, right?)
✨ It helps to promote healing, which is very important considering you have a dinner-plate sized wound in your uterus!
✨ It aids in balancing hormones, which is essential as the biggest hormone crash you’ll ever experience in your life happens days after you birth your baby

You can find protein in foods like beef, chicken, eggs, fish, turkey, pork, lentils, beans, chickpeas and tempeh. Make sure you’re incorporating a serving of protein in each meal to support your body in all the wonderful things it’s doing in the postpartum period!

Life with two young babes can be pretty hectic sometimes. Between all the nappy changes, constantly making snacks, breastfeeding, making sure everyones’ water bottles are topped up, encouraging play, separating fights & lots of cuddles, it’s not often I have a moment to myself between 6am and 7pm!

So how do I make it work? I have a few non-negotiables to make sure that my metaphorical (and physical!) cup is full, so I can continue looking after my babes.

💧 Drinking LOTS of water, at least 3L a day. It’s the key to skin health, digestion & just feeling good.
🍓 Prepping breakfast the night before. The mornings are always the busiest, so in order to prevent the whole “I don’t have time” excuse, I make sure I have something ready to go for me to eat in between feeding the boys. My go-tos are chia pudding & overnight weetbix!
👯‍♀️ Social time. I’m so lucky to have a beautiful tribe of mama friends here in Kal, and we go out for dinner sans-kids at least once a month, plus we hang out at the park with the kids. Finding women who understand you & hold space for you is key to finding enjoyment in mamahood
☕️ Limiting caffeine intake. Once upon a time (in my shift-working years!), I relied on caffeine to get me through the day. Now, it’s simply a morning ritual - it’s how I enjoy starting my day. By keeping my caffeine intake at least 8 hours away from bedtime, I’m giving myself the best chance at quality nighttime sleep (well, as good as it can be with two young kids who like to wake at all hours!)
📖 Meal planning is a weekly thing in our household. We’ll sit down, choose our dinners and place a click&collect order. So much easier than shopping with kids in tow!

I’m certainly not perfect - aren’t we all just a work in progress? - but these rituals & routines help me to stay as healthy as I can be, so I have the energy to keep up with my active boys.

Do you need help finding out what works for you? Let’s get you feeling better too - book in for a free chat about how support could look for you, send me a message!

Chia seeds are a wonderful addition to your baby’s diet - not only do they contain protein & fats, they’re known for helping to prevent and relieve constipation, which is so common while their tiny tummies are adjusting to solid foods. Chia draws water into the bowel, which can make stool softer & easier to pass.

One of the easiest ways to serve them to your babe is to soak them in milk and yoghurt, to make chia pudding. You can add different fruit purees to it to keep it interesting for them and expose babe to different flavours. For bonus constipation relief, mash up some soft stonefruit - think nectarines, mangoes, plums and peaches - and add it to the pudding. Chia is safe to serve to bub from as soon as they start solids, so give it a go!

Have you tried serving chia to your little one yet?

Are you a postpartum mama & wondering how a nutrition coach can help you? Read Madeleine’s story here…

Maddy came to me when she was in her postpartum period - feeling stressed, experiencing wicked hair loss and knowing her nutrition needed improving.

We worked together to figure out the gaps in her diet and how she could make small tweaks to what she was already doing to get big changes in her energy levels and postpartum healing.

Safe to say she was stoked with our chat together - she especially loved being gifted with her ebook after our chat, with all the info and actions for her to take, as well as some easy recipes and cheat sheets, so she didn’t have to go off memory.

Since working together, she finds she has more energy and has noticed a big difference already!

Madeleine recommends nutrition consults to “postpartum mums who want to better their diet but who want to do it from the comfort of their own home.”

Ready to get started on improving your own diet, just like Maddy? Book your consult now via the link in bio, I can’t wait to chat to you!

Want to feel energised throughout the day? Eat your brekkie!

It sets the tone for the day, and research suggests that if you eat an unbalanced, nutrient-lacking breakfast, or skip brekkie altogether, you’re more likely to eat poorly for the rest of the day.

Mornings with kids can be chaotic at best, so I know it’s tough to find the time to make something nutrient-dense for your brekkie. Here’s a few tips & recipe ideas to make things easier.

Some mornings, you won’t have any options apart from toast, and you know what? That’s okay. It’s better than skipping brekkie altogether. If you can, try to level it up to make it balanced - add some avocado for fats, a serving of fruit for fibre, and a boiled egg for a protein hit.

Make sure you save this post for some inspiration!
