I’m interested to hear how the season in your area is affecting your Practise/life.
In the area where I live there are 6 seasons rather than the four we have imported from the northern hemisphere. The First Nations people of D’harawal know it as the cold and windy season of Tugarah gunya’marri.*. Its whale time, time and mating time particularly for the lyrebird The wind according to Bodkin, an amazing scientist and indigenous elder, also makes us all a little short tempered.
For me the windy season is a metaphor for growth. I encourage you to discover your own local lore. It will help you be in yoga. Being aware will enhance your contemporary life, it has mine.
Correspondences, based on my personal observations, we will explore these in upcoming posts.
Metaphor for growth : the wind stirs up trouble and sweeps away the unnecessary. A time for planning and scheduling, strengthening your resolve to implement change with the warmer temperatures in between those cold winds allowing action to occur. It maybe a time of breakthroughs and epiphany. Self-awareness and releasing resistance, following the inward turning of the cold months. Perhaps you learned a new skill or art form during that time and now you are expressing this through art, craft, movement, writing, work.
Pranayama/Breathing: Kumbhaka breath retention
Home: clearing spaces, decluttering and cleaning, organise fun things for the warmer months.
Colour: Azure look up into the sky and observe the deep colour at this time of the year.
Movement & Asana: twisting, back-bending, walking/running, cycling, stretching, jumping.
Meditation: equanimity
Pledge: kindness, truth in communication, commitment
Eating: seasonal produce pumpkin, cabbage, cruciferous, citris, fermenting, warming, slow cooked, curry, soup.
Personal care: skin scrubbing (dry brush, natural loofah or Korean mits) and minimising stress triggers. Self-massage: Double-tennis ball in a sock for either side of the spine, heat packs, hot water bottles, ginger compress.
Journalling: Realistic and enjoyable ways to achieve goals, make it a game.
*I do not speak for Australians, this was, is and always will be land and knowledge. I find it endlessly fascinating 😊🙏
