I’m interested to hear how the season in your area is affecting your Practise/life.
In the area where I live there are 6 seasons rather than the four we have imported from the northern hemisphere. The First Nations people of D’harawal know it as the cold and windy season of Tugarah gunya’marri.*. Its whale time, time and mating time particularly for the lyrebird The wind according to Bodkin, an amazing scientist and indigenous elder, also makes us all a little short tempered.

For me the windy season is a metaphor for growth. I encourage you to discover your own local lore. It will help you be in yoga. Being aware will enhance your contemporary life, it has mine.
Correspondences, based on my personal observations, we will explore these in upcoming posts.
Metaphor for growth : the wind stirs up trouble and sweeps away the unnecessary. A time for planning and scheduling, strengthening your resolve to implement change with the warmer temperatures in between those cold winds allowing action to occur. It maybe a time of breakthroughs and epiphany. Self-awareness and releasing resistance, following the inward turning of the cold months. Perhaps you learned a new skill or art form during that time and now you are expressing this through art, craft, movement, writing, work.

Pranayama/Breathing: Kumbhaka breath retention
Home: clearing spaces, decluttering and cleaning, organise fun things for the warmer months.

Colour: Azure look up into the sky and observe the deep colour at this time of the year.

Movement & Asana: twisting, back-bending, walking/running, cycling, stretching, jumping.

Meditation: equanimity

Pledge: kindness, truth in communication, commitment

Eating: seasonal produce pumpkin, cabbage, cruciferous, citris, fermenting, warming, slow cooked, curry, soup.

Personal care: skin scrubbing (dry brush, natural loofah or Korean mits) and minimising stress triggers. Self-massage: Double-tennis ball in a sock for either side of the spine, heat packs, hot water bottles, ginger compress.

Journalling: Realistic and enjoyable ways to achieve goals, make it a game.
*I do not speak for Australians, this was, is and always will be land and knowledge. I find it endlessly fascinating 😊🙏

Beyond fitness and environmental sustainability benefits how can we make that trip to the shops or Sunday pedal part of our Yoga Practise? Through our awareness of posture, breathing and nature as well as knowing where we are at and challenging yourself. Not so much that you will be exhausted just enough to maintain enjoyment and make progress. This is my first ride in months so I didn’t push myself up hills but I really enjoyed my seaside ride. I had a little open eyed meditation and breathing exercise on a break. I noticed I was smiling almost all of the time and was greeted with many in return, something I miss from living previously in more country areas.
Posture: we will explore posture in more detail but bike riding can put your back into an awful C-curve which may ache. On this kind of bike you can sit with your spine in alignment. Point your pubic-bone to the earth creating a little hollow in your lower back and lift up through the spine and chest. Your seat should be adjusted so your toes only touch the ground so you have maximum extension in your leg muscles and hence efficiency.
Breathing: once you have got into a cycling rhythm pay attention to how you are breathing perhaps deepening it into your lower lungs.
Nature: if your living in an urban area, make an effort to ride in a park or bushland, stop and have a break and take in the different colours, textures and sounds. Connect with other humans, you may make someone’s day with your smile, greeting or compliment.

Prana is not only about the breath, it's also about the environment in which we surround ourselves. Consider the food you eat, the people you share your time with, your relationship to plants and animals, the prioritising of your activities. The energy you gather and take into yourself nourishes your own life-force. Ask yourself how you can provide a fertile growing media for that seed within you that wants to emerge. [ 39 more words ]

Poke Bowl or maybe I should call it a Prana Bowl, it gives you so much energy without being heavy. This is not strictly like the Poke I had in Hawaii, they make it much more simply without the Togarashi, maybe just some sesame. It was my staple there as I was recovering from an illness, I was after a healthy, inexpensive meal that wasn't American take-away. [ 326 more words ]
