Short Term Respite (STR) - Essential Information for NDIS Participants and Providers.

The NDIS has implemented changes to Short Term Accommodation (STA), now referred to as Short Term Respite (STR), impacting both participants and providers.

STA/STR provides temporary accommodation for participants needing respite care or awaiting suitable home arrangements. It includes accommodation, personal care, daily living support, and activities, funded under Core - Assistance with Daily Life.

Typically, stays are limited to 14 days at a time and approximately 28 days annually unless otherwise approved. STA/STR is not intended for housing crises, prolonged stays, or recreational purposes.

Key updates include eligibility limitations for those residing alone or in Supported Independent Living (SIL), increased compliance measures, and a preference for group accommodations.

Participants should review their NDIS plan, living situation, provider suitability, and budget before booking STR.

The smell of freshly baked cookies is filling 5 Stud Road today and it's amazing. The participants living here are baking cookies, building capacity, self advocating and enjoying tasks together. Those who don't want to join in will be lining up for the warm cookies.

This is not just a building providing disability accommodation - this is a community!

Yes it has all the features of high physical supports, all of the AT to make life fuller for people who have disability, but it's more than that.

The soul in the building and the community that has been created is what makes this place a home.

Our dedicated team of support workers are the best!

Want to bring someone close to you into your SDA home? Here’s how!

Have you ever wanted a friend, partner, or family member to live with you in your Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA), but they’re not on the NDIS?

💡 That’s where **Appendix H** comes in!

Appendix H is an NDIS rule that could help you get extra funding for a 2-bedroom SDA home so you can live with someone of your choosing.

Here’s how it works:
- You get SDA funding for a 2-bedroom apartment
- Your chosen person pays rent, helps with bills (like internet, electricity, etc.), and signs a rental agreement
- They’re not involved in your support — they’re just your housemate, family member, or partner

It’s all about **more choice and control** over who you live with — while keeping your supports professional and separate.

Looking for Supported Disability living options? Supported Independent Living (SIL) providers we work with you to help you with accommodation to suit your participants.

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is probably the most misunderstood NDIS service.

Myth: SIL means you can't live independently. Reality: SIL means you get exactly the support you need to live as independently as possible.

Myth: SIL is 24/7 care. Reality: SIL is tailored to your individual needs - might be 2 hours a day, might be overnight support, might be just weekends.

Myth: SIL means living with strangers. Reality: SIL can be delivered in your own home, with housemates you choose, or individually.

At Equal Living, our SIL participants have chosen their support level after experiencing it first hand during STA or MTA stays. They know exactly what they're signing up for.

Some participants discovered they needed less support than expected. Others realized they could manage independently for longer periods with the right assistive technology - and this all happens within the one building, the one community.

We work with SIL partners and help support their participants with our Concierge services. Working together to fill gaps in support across the footprint.

The key is choice based on experience, not assumptions.
