What is a corn?

A corn is a build up of hard thick areas of skin. Corns tend to be small, round and can also be painful. Here are a few reasons why you may develop a corn:

- Shoes that don’t fit properly. This is the most common cause of corns on the top of your feet. Shoes that are too tight or have areas that rub against your skin can cause friction and pressure

-Standing, walking or running for long periods of time

- Physical hobbies, sports or work that puts pressure on your feet and/or causes repeated friction

- Going barefoot

- Not wearing socks with footwear

-Walking with an improper posture (walking too heavily on the inner or outer edge of your foot)

Calluses are thick, hardened layers of skin that develop when the skin tries to protect itself against friction or pressure.

Signs and symptoms of calluses include:
* A thick, rough area of skin
* A hardened, raised bump
* Tenderness or pain under the skin
* Flaky, dry or waxy skin

If any of these sound or feel familiar give us a call and we’ll assess!

Cracked heels can be a common foot problem. If left untreated and the cracked become deeper it can be quite painful to walk. Some causes may include
- being on your feet for long periods of time
- Hard and unsupportive footwear
- Walking barefoot as this provides no support
- Obesity

Symptoms other than dry and cracked skin to look out for would be
- pain and discomfort especially when standing
- Bleeding from the cracks
- Warmth or redness in the area

Let us help you “heel” your feet and talk products you can use

Diabetes affects the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar levels which may result in nerve damage and poor blood flow.

Diabetic neuropathy - causes nerve damage that leads to loss of sensation in your feet. This can come in the form of numbness or tingling. This means you may not have the ability to detect injuries such as cuts or blisters. Ignoring or thinking these things are minor can lead to infections and the development of diabetic ulcers.

Poor blood flow to your extremities makes it hard for wounds and infections to heal. This becomes a risk of serious infections which can progress rapidly.

We can assess your feet and start you on a regular foot care schedule!

Foot pain may keep you from enjoying life and staying active. Here are some tips to help avoid foot problems:

- check your feet everyday. Don’t wait until your feet hurt. Look for cuts, sores or potential infection
- When washing your feet make sure to dry well between your toes
- Wear comfortable shoes and socks. Make sure they have good support and fit properly

Let us help you keep your feet healthy 👣
