Hey Friends, lets chat about FIBRE.
There are so many health benefits of a diet rich in dietary fibre- in addition to supporting a healthy well fed gut microbiome;
- improved gut motility- ie keeping you regular, not constipated or Loosey gosey.
- significant reduction in bowel cancer risk. 20% of colorectal cancers can be avoided by increasing daily fibre intake.
- supports immune function (70% of your immune system is in your gut)
- prevention and management of type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance
- reduction in chronic inflammation and conditions impacted by inflammation such as IBD - Crohns and Ulcerative colitis.
- healthy happy mood- a high fibre mediteranean style diet is first line treatment for prevention and management of depression and anxiety- look at "the smiles Trial" from the food and mood academy at Deakin Uni.https://foodandmoodcentre.com.au/smiles-trial/
- reduction in cholesterol levels- without medication
- prevention of cardiovasular disease
- 11% reduction in all-cause mortality for each 10-g per day increment in the consumption of dietary fibre.

Heres the evidence
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7589116/

The minimum recommended amount to aim for is 30g of dietary fibre per day. Best results come from eating a range of diverse types of fibre, not just adding 1 scoop of psyllium husk or metamucil to your breaky, though that could be a start!

Reach out to make a clinic appointment to chat about how increasing dietary fibre can help improve your life.
You can BOOK AN APPT or view my Calendar here: https://bigbowlofhappy.as.me/

MUSHROOM MAGIC. I know Mushies are getting some bad press at the moment. But those tricksy ones aside, they are an absolute powerhouse nutrient to include in your Winter diet.
Mushies can make VITAMIN D when you place them in sunlight for 15 mins. and Eating just 3 mushies that have had a little sunbake, provides 100% of the RDI (reccommended daily intake) of Vitamin D.

Bowel cancer is alarmingly prevalent in younger people. A low fibre diet is one of the factors influencing the rise. A degree qualified dietitian or nutritionist like me can help get you on the right path to enriching your diet with lots of beautiful diverse plant fibre.
If you are not sure if your poo is “Normal”, - (Once or twice a day- smooth and easy to pass is the ideal)- or your concerned that you are not getting 30-50g dietary fibre per day- then please reach out- I’d love to help.

Please note-
If you have pain or blood in your stool - please make an appointment with your GP asap.

Young people are more than twice as likely to get forms of bowel cancer than older Australians were at the same age, and researchers have a few clues as to why.
