Important Announcement

Hi Team, Brayden here. I just wanted to reach out and let you know about a few changes that are coming to MyoBreath. Due to other work commitments I have made the tough decision to move out of Base Performance & Recovery. I have loved my time at Base. It has been an awesome place to hang out and treat out of. I will certainly miss everyone there.

From the 6th of July, I will be heading home and treating on a Tuesday and Thursday fortnightly schedule back at PEAK Family Chiropractic. I am beyond excited to be able to treat with my peak family again!

All appointments can be made via my online booking page or via messenger.

For all existing appointments these will now be at PEAK Family Chiropractic

Thanks for your support,

Brayden

Case Study: ITB pain in distance runner

ITB pain in runners is pretty common to see in the clinic. Depending on whether its bilateral or single sided will lead me down a couple potential paths. Typically I tend to find a lot of breathing mechanic dysfunction within aerobic sports such as running. This can be attributed to many things, but ultimately aerobic athletes breathe harder for longer and thus have the ability to generate dysfunctional patterns easier.

When working with ITB pain I like to check to see if there is any underlying intrinsic core compensations before moving into the lateral sub system. Quite often I'll see a compensatory pattern within the lateral subsystem or deep longitudinal subsystem that creates symptoms of pain in the lateral compartment of the legs.

Treating the compensation without trying to rectify root casual issues will be futile.

In this case we had to do some diaphragm work before we earn permission to work on the leg.

After the treatment all NKT testing showed an improvement in function. We will do some corrective exercise to help develop better stability strategies over the next few weeks to help get this runner back on track for their races this year.

If you're having issues with ITB pain please feel free to book in for an appointment so we can do see what compensation patterns you may have developed through your training.

Do you often experience forearm or wrist pain? The Flexor Carpi Radialis could be a contributor to some of the symptoms you may be experiencing. The FCR is a muscle that can commonly be tight and either inhibited or facilitated. It can often be in dysfunctional pairing with other muscles in the forearm or shoulder.

Those people who are on the tool or use their hands to carry or tighten things as apart of their daily roles may experience tightness in this area.

Some self massage in the anterior compartment of the forearm can help if these muscles are tight and overactive.

If you have been experiencing ongoing forearm referral pain please feel free to book an appointment so we can assess what dysfunctional relationships you may have.

Got knee pain? Have you been told you have jumpers knee or Osgood Schlatters?

Theres a pretty good chance that the rec fem has something to do with your symptoms.

Quite often I'll see the rec fem be weak and tight which will lead on ongoing tendon loading. This weakness can certainly come from growth spurts in kids however in adults or those who have passed their peak height velocity I will often see a weakness in eccentric force production.

The rec fem does respond well do to treatment if the muscle is tight and over active however, building up eccentric load tolerance and conversely concentric force production will ultimately lead to a more functional muscle and hopefully a reduction in pain.

Lastly, understanding what the environmental factors are that lead to knee or hip pain will help develop a better plan moving forward. If there has been way too much knee loading due to an exponential increasing in impacts, or tonnage then manipulating these factors can help reduce symptoms as well.

The Quadratus Lumborum is one of the coolest sounding muscle names out there. Kinda reminds me of a Harry Potter spell.

Don't be fooled though the QL is no joke when it comes to pain and compensation.

Quite often I see the QL dysfunctional based on NKT assessment. It can easily be over active or under active. It can compensate for intrinsic core muscles, muscles in the low back, jaw or even in the ankle.

Quit often the QL can create sciatic type referral pain too.

Just like the Psoas, not every QL needs to be released. It always pay to assess before digging in.

If you have some QL'ish type referral pain please feel free to come in for an assessment.

The Vastus Lateralis (VL) is a part of our quadricep group. It tends to be pretty dominant compared to the other quads.

Sometimes the ITB gets blamed from lateral knee pain when really the VL is the primary driver.

The VL responds well to manual therapy. I prefer using dry needling, massage guns and some remedial massage techniques to treat the VL.

If you are struggling with lateral knee pain, feel free to come in and book an appointment in the clinic.

I believe knowing whats in our body allows us to better understand and respect pain, function, dysfunction and adaptation. So I have decided to put together some short bullet point slides to help bring some awareness to key muscles in our body that I often support.

Each post will have a pic of the muscle, a referral pattern picture and some key bullet points.

If you feel like some of the muscles that I list here are contributing to your pain or dysfunction please book a massage appointment online.

I'd be happy to help support.
