Still running at 66yo. The Gokhale Method works. I can say so…as that is me. 🙂

Do you love running? Spring is the perfect time to hit the road! With pleasant weather, longer daylight hours, and a chance to shake off winter sluggishness, it's the ideal season to get back in shape.

But before you run, have you ever considered your pelvic positioning? Tucked or anteverted? We recommend the latter!

An anteverted pelvis confers a mechanical advantage to the buttock muscles. With the behind behind, they can contract powerfully to pull the legs back and aid propulsion. Under-developed glutes are a common casualty when the pelvis is tucked.

It is also important that, in an effort to get your behind behind, the anteverted pelvis is not mimicked by simply sticking your bottom back with tension (sway) in the lower back. The pelvis needs to settle into anteversion naturally, with healthy articulation at the L5-S1 joint, relaxed back muscles and hip joints, and healthy alignment throughout the body.

Motion is Lotion!
I do Mobile Massage in Kauai Hawaii That, of itself, is a workout for me. Carrying my table and physically manoeuvring the body is a good workout. But, I also dance doing Latin, Rock n' Roll or whatever suits the music. Having fun and moving increases your happy chemicals, increases energy and circulation in the body. Movement helps decrease inflammation and helps prevent diseases that go along with it. It's Good for the heart and the soul. Also, with improved cardiovascular health comes an increase in blood flow to the brain. During exercise, there is increased pumping of oxygen-rich blood to all our body organs and this has tremendous benefits on our brain. Aerobic exercise improves memory and thinking and lowers the risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Come see me today for a massage. I also teach posture. So happy to have a discussion about what is best for you and your health. Massage is a good place to start to get those muscles loosened up to prepare you for some more movement and fun in your life.

Aging and strength. The benefits of exercise at any age. But most importantly when you are older. Stay fit to prevent osteoporosis, keep your heart strong, improve your s*x life and more...

“You can’t help getting older, but you don’t have to get old.” George Burns. I love that line. I often hear my massage clients say that their pain is a result of old age. This amuses me…

Researchers have established a direct link between massage and a healthy endocrine system.

Many people understand the physical benefits of massage on our bodies. But not everyone realises the advantages massage has on the endocrine system – which is the hormonal system of the body. Researchers have established a direct link between positive touch and a healthy functioning endocrine system.

Adrenaline – Today most people produce adrenaline regularly in response to stress at home and work. This is not because they were being chased by a tiger, but it has become a normal state of being for many of us under today’s pressures. Adrenaline regulation through massage is great for people who are stressed, have trouble sleeping, have mental health issues or high blood pressure.

Dopamine – Massage therapy can elevate dopamine levels. Dopamine is a hormone that supports fine motor activities; it encourages inspiration, excitement, feelings of joy and the brain’s reward and pleasure centres. An elevation of dopamine is really good for people who are quickly distracted, have poor focus and feel a lack of enthusiasm.

Serotonin – Positive touch like massage increases the availability of serotonin. Serotonin is a hormone that helps regulate your emotions, and boost your mood. Increased serotonin is good for people who suffer from depression, mood swings, cravings or have trouble sleeping.

Oxytocin – Massage therapy also helps produce the ‘love hormone’ oxytocin. It influences feelings of trust and reduces the stress response feeling of anxiety. In one of his studies, published in the journal Alternative Therapies in 2012, Professor Zak found that just 15 minutes of massage caused oxytocin levels to rise by 17 per cent

Cortisol – Massage therapy can help with the correct regulation of cortisol within the body to help relieve stress and induce a sense of calm.

Massage encourages hormones to be secreted at the right time and in the right doses. Let massage therapy help with your hormone regulation encouraging your overall health and wellbeing.

Autumn and Winter Mood Boosters

It’s starting to get cooler here in Australia. But these tips work all year round. So even if it’s summer where you are in the world, try them!
Whether you embrace a cold day or grumble and hit the snooze button on your alarm for the third time, the end of "daylight savings" for some can result in many feeling low, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Change of season is strongly linked with falling levels of the mood-boosting hormone serotonin that occurs as the weather changes. Here are some ideas to help boost your mood and your serotonin levels now and this coming winter:

Cultivate Gratitude: Cultivating an attitude of gratitude can benefit our lives in ways that seem truly miraculous. People who consistently practice gratitude report stronger immune systems and lower blood pressure, and research shows that gratitude increases happiness and decreases depression. You can keep a gratitude journal and add to it every day. Tell someone you love them and how much you appreciate them. Notice the beauty in nature each day. Nurture the friendships you have, good friends don’t come along every day. Smile more often.

Dance: Yes,” Dance allows people to experience themselves in ways they didn’t know they could,” says Miriam Berger, a dance professor and dance therapist at New York University. “You can change your internal state through external movement.” Cardiac-rehab patients in a recent Italian study who enrolled in waltzing classes not only wound up with more elastic arteries, but were happier than participants who took up bicycle and treadmill training. Even watching dancing helps. MRI scans show that watching someone dance activates the same neurons that would fire if you were doing the moves yourself.

Happy Foods: We don’t just “feel better.” To feel better, we manufacture serotonin using an amino acid called tryptophan as the precursor. You can add a serotonin-boosting food at each meal: eggs, turkey, salmon, bean sprouts, asparagus, nuts and seeds, cheese, pineapple, tofu, spinach and bananas are some good ones to try. You can also eat curry Turmeric has emerged in recent years as a powerful antidepressant, in many cases equaling or even surpassing the effects of prescription antidepressants. Turmeric (or curcumin) increases brain serotonin levels.

Go out for a walk and get some sun: While too much of the sun’s warm rays can be harmful to your skin, the right balance can have lots of mood-lifting benefits. If you can get yourself out for a quick 10-15 minute walk in the morning it will set the tone for a happier day. Sun and exercise both increase your serotonin levels.

Get a Massage: MassageWe’ve heard about the healing power of touch, but now research backs it up! A study conducted by the Touch Research Institutes at the University of Miami School of Medicine shows that massage increases serotonin by 28% and decreases cortisol (the stress hormone) by 31%.

Pay attention to your Posture: Feeling taller tricks your brain into making you feel more confident. The next time you’re feeling sad and depressed, pay close attention to your posture. According to cognitive scientists, you’ll likely be slumped over with your neck and shoulders curved forward and head looking down. While it’s true that you’re sitting this way because you’re sad, it’s also true that you’re sad because you’re sitting this way. This philosophy, known as embodied cognition, is the idea that the relationship between our mind and body runs both ways, meaning our mind influences the way our body reacts, but the form of our body also triggers our mind.

In conclusion, feeling Happy and Healthy
is our aim!

‘Maybe you are searching amongst the branches, for what only appears in the roots.’ Rumi

I saw this quote today and it made me think of the work I do. Massage can be great in finding the root cause of your problem. To address your foundation (roots) that support you, sometimes, you need to release the contracted muscles in your (branches) that are causing you pain. Once the body becomes more relaxed and fluid through massage, you can more easily focus on your unhealthy habits that are most likely causing your pain in the first place. Little changes made in posture can allow the body to heal. You just need to know how your foundation works for you and not against you. Learning to align the body can release the lesser muscles straining to keep you upright and help you incorporate the use of the body's larger muscle groups, the muscles designed to do this job in the first place. Today society has taken many wrong turns. Poor furnishings that cause our bodies to distort, from baby seats, our desk chairs, car seats and more. The way we sleep at night and bend to lift things can be the cause of our pain. Standing like a misconstructed pillar can cause us to become unstable. I do both massage and posture work because these two things work hand in hand to help heal the whole body...Branches and Roots. Lomi Lomi Massage – A Personal Sense of Peace

People come to me for massage for many reasons. They are looking for relief of pain or anxiety and a brief, but much-needed, escape from the stress life throws at them.

No matter the reason, I assure my clients a safe and peaceful place on my table. I reinforce that the time we share is all about them and only them. I make sure that they are comfortable and physically supported on my table. The music and the flowing movements give them the opportunity to drift off to wherever they wish to go.

Massage like no other, provides relief from physical, emotional, and mental stress, and decreases levels of depression, anxiety, irritability, and other symptoms. By soothing the body and calming the mind, massages can provide relief, allowing the prefrontal cortex to regain balance and better manage emotions. Massage also provides a calming effect by increasing endorphins, serotonin and dopamine giving a person a sense of well-being and reduced anxiety.

The exquisite movements of Lomi Lomi are particularly geared to a feeling of deep calm and peacefulness. People are different afterwards. They often say they feel taller, freer, more open and overall, more serene. Some are more alert and ready to take on the day. Others just want to revel in the tranquil feeling and rest for a while longer. Lomi Lomi massage feels like magic but can be explained scientifically. All I can say is, I see it every time I do one. It makes me feel appreciated and happy knowing that I can offer this to my clients. Do you need some time just for you?

Lomi Lomi is the Hawaiian word for massage. Loosely translated, It means “to make soft.” The physical results of a lomi lomi massage are remarkable. It releases tight muscles; frees up joints, relieves stress and leaves you feeling amazing! It is like peeling an onion. The therapist loosens up the layers of knots and tight muscles as you slip into a deep sense of calm and relaxation. Even though it can be deep, it is never a torture session that leaves you bruised and having to heal from the session. It promotes circulation and releases stagnant energy from within. This massage works on many levels.

Set to music, this Bodywork resembles a dance that flows over and under your body. Healers use hands, fingers and arms to employ therapeutic techniques of rhythmic pulling, pushing and long flowing strokes. Each practitioner adds their personalised styles as they intuitively cater for what your body needs; anything from strong and intense pressure to calm and nurturing movements.

My personal style is highly influenced by my study of posture and how the muscles and body are meant to work for optimum health. It is also driven by the theory “Do No Harm.” The movements are deliberate, focused and never jerky. If you haven’t tried a Lomi Lomi massage…Simply put, You don't know what you're missing! I truly believe it is the best massage I have ever received, and it is an honour and delight to share it. I invite you to look up my reviews.
