dads, listen.
she fed your baby with her bones.
her blood.
her brain.

breastmilk is made from her blood.
every drop takes water, nutrients, and energy.

magnesium and zinc
pulled to grow your baby’s immune system.
she’s left with cramps, poor sleep, hormonal chaos.

omega-3s (dha)
taken from her brain to build your baby’s brain and eyes.
she’s left foggy, emotional, sometimes depressed.

iron
used to make your baby’s blood.

calcium
taken from her bones to build your baby’s.
she can lose bone density. end up dizzy. anaemic. drained.

her blood volume rose by 50% to nourish your baby.
then she lost so much of it at birth.
recovery takes time.

protein. fat. carbs.
her body gave it all to your baby first,
even when she wasn’t eating enough.

and still..
she wakes.
she soothes.
she shows up.

every cell of your baby was built by her.
her body is the blueprint.
her sacrifice is the reason.

someone needs to be reminded what she’s done 🖤

A belated but important shoutout to an incredible midwife of the Southwest community!

Loralee was my midwife during the pregnancy, birth and postpartum of my third child - Lani.

I loved her intent attitude towards birth, her knowledge and the way she knew exactly how to guide me when I was questioning myself the most. She is an incredible human being and all mothers would be lucky to have her in their birth space.

Thank you eternally Loralee Paddock (Loralee Paddock Worrall) at Naturaliste Midwifery - you will forever be an important part of my life. Happy International Midwives Day to you!

And also to all the midwives out there, loving and guiding mothers through one of the most transformative events of their lives.

Your work is valuable, and so necessary.

THANK YOU 🪷

“A doula doesn’t take the place of anyone—they hold the space for everyone. Steady in the flow, radiant in the rhythm, and unwavering in their belief in a woman’s ability to birth her way.”

World Doula Week - Day #4

Heart-centred Self Care as a Doula.

Self care was once to me a long dusty red road and an even longer drive...

Being a Doula is most certainly a labour of love, but also requires a different level of care for myself.

So self-care is now...

Long walks and long talks with my husband
Painting the intricacies of my heart
Writing long stories
Watching a sunset
Having a sleep
Singing with the choir

Anything that enriches my own soul, fills up my own cup and has me serving myself.

Self care is as important as breathing.

Because the reality of life is that you cannot give to anyone if your own cup is empty.

World Doula Week - Day #3

The Importance of a Doula in Birth & Postpartum

Did you know that Doulas contribute to better outcomes for women?

We are living in a glorious phase of history where science and research are beginning to reflect the significantly positive effect a doula can have on birth and postpartum experiences.

Having a Doula at your birth has been proven to:

❤ Reduce the need for Pitocin or augmented labour
❤ Reduce the need for vacuum or forceps
❤ Reduce the likelihood of C-section
❤ Reduce requests for pain relief
❤ Provide better satisfaction with the birth process
❤ Improve Postpartum mental health

The benefits of having a doula does not end there.

World Doula Week - Day #2

There is always a moment.

During the swaying and dance-like movements of a birthing mother.

During the carefully counted breaths.

During the concentration and determination.

A moment where the mother starts to believe that she just cannot do this anymore. She is adamant - she is exhausted, she wants the drugs, she wants this to end, she wants to go home.

Her caretakers know, this is it. This is the space of transition.

This is where a Doula becomes crucial.

Her role - to bring Mum back to herself, to remind her of her strength.

To count breaths, moments and movements with her.

To give her mind something to anchor to so that her body can let go and let baby come.

They are the most beautiful they have ever been in this moment.

Being a Doula is to be invited to watch a miracle unfold.

The miracle of a mother.

World Doula Week - Celebrating Doulas from all over the world!

My Why!

To be honest I didn't even know what a Doula was until I was pregnant with my son... I was speaking to someone about my traumatic first birth and they suggested a Doula.

I was immediately intrigued and did my research into the benefits of a doula and how they could support me. I found one in my local area and met with her not long after.

I felt held and supported by her.

She didn't have to do much but be there! I just needed to know that there was someone in the room that had ME. No matter the direction my birth took.

Fast forward 5 years later and I realised that my urge to understand my trauma better was also pushing me to provide that for other mothers too.

I want every mother to feel supported, seen, held while they traverse the liminal space of childbirth. I want every mother to know she is not forgotten now that she has birthed her child. You have value and you are important even in your postpartum.

That gap in care for new mothers is enormous and I want to make sure that no mother is left alone in their experience.

I became a Doula to support Mums!

When you are training to work with medications as a nurse one of the first things you learn about are the rights of medication...

One of those is the 'Right To Refuse'.

Yes, that's right we are taught that to remain within our scope of practice that we must honour your right to say no.

Often the women I've worked with don't realise the importance of the word no and how much power it holds for them.

That includes medication, medical procedures and anything else that involves your care.

If you don't want that cervical exam - 'No' is a complete sentence.

If you don't want regular CTG monitoring -
'No' is a complete sentence.

Protect your right to decide for yourself ❤️
