Women’s Health and Equality Qld are leaders in women’s health, gender equity and primary prevention.

We provide Queensland women and gender-diverse people with counselling, therapeutic groups and women’s health services for experiences of violence, as well as professional education, community programs & structural reform.

As we welcome 2026, Women’s Health and Equality Queensland is entering a new chapter.

After six years of service, our CEO Emma Iwinska is stepping down from her role as she moves interstate to support her children in pursuing their dreams. Emma leaves behind an extraordinary legacy, including the establishment of our Women’s Centres to support healing and recovery after violence, the launch of 1800 4 WOMEN, the Brisbane DFV Forum, and strong advocacy for a Queensland Women and Girls Health Strategy.

WHEQ’s programs and services will continue as usual under the leadership of the Executive Team. Chief Operating Officer Morgana Jones will step into the role of Acting CEO while the Board undertakes recruitment for the next CEO.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Emma for her leadership, vision and unwavering commitment to women’s health, gender equity and the primary prevention of violence. We also thank our staff, Board, partners and community for their continued collaboration and support.

We’re taught to start the year by fixing ourselves – our bodies, our habits, our productivity, our emotions.

That’s not accidental.
Patriarchy (and the systems tied to it) profits when we believe we are broken:
🔹when girls and femmes are taught to shrink, perfect, and buy solutions;
🔹when boys and masc folks are taught to override their bodies, ignore rest, and prove worth through output.

Diet culture, hustle culture, and “self-improvement” industries thrive on this lie: that you are a problem to be solved.

But you are not.

Movement doesn’t have to be punishment.
Food doesn’t have to be controlled.
Rest doesn’t need to be earned.

You don’t need a reset, a glow-up, or a better version of yourself to deserve care.
This year, we’re opting out of the pressure.
Choosing softness over discipline.
Care over control.

You were never broken.
And you don’t need fixing.

The Community Ally Network is supported by investment from the Paul Ramsay Foundation and delivered in partnership with Pasifika Women's Alliance and Queensland Program of Assistance to Survivors of Torture and Trauma.

The timetable for our 2026 Term 1 & 2 groups is now live! ⭐️

At WHEQ, we offer free therapeutic, social, practical and educational groups for women and gender diverse people with experiences of violence.

Our open groups can be booked online through the WHEQ website.

Our closed groups will need to be booked with a WHEQ staff member. Please contact us on 07 3216 0976 (ext.1) or email health@wheq.org.au to talk further or enrol in these groups.

❤ Big changes can feel hard.

Whether we like it or not, social media has become a major part of teenagers' lives.

For most young people, the Social Media Ban may drastically change their daily routine, how they communicate with friends and how they express themselves. Big feelings like anger, grief, stress and even relief are completely normal.

For many, this is a big life change and it’s important your young people feel supported as they navigate this transition.

So today, remember: Be kind, listen, validate their feelings, and offer support when you can.

When we talk about trauma and gender informed care we need to talk about cultural safety and healing.

Cultural safety and healing looks like:
❤ Creating safe spaces, healing places and identifying safe people
❤ Building a strong cultural identity by reconnecting to our cultural values and practice
❤ Learning about the impacts of trauma on our minds, bodies and spirits so we can find paths to healing
❤ Rebuilding our relational support systems with family, community and services that can support us

Earlier this month we visited Toowoomba and Warrick to deliver our Trauma and Gender Informed Care Workshop.

The workshops provided Health and Community Sector training on how to bring a trauma-informed and gendered lens to practice and services to women - and were the inspiration behind our theme for this years 16 Days of Activism!

We are so grateful for the community in Toowoomba and Warrick for showing up and learning with us!

Your window of tolerance is the range where you feel calm, present, and able to cope with what’s happening around you. When you’re inside your window, your body and brain feel safe enough to think clearly, manage your emotions, and respond calmly.

Because the nervous system is still on high alert from the trauma, even small stresses or reminders of the trauma can push someone outside their window.

When that happens, they might go into:
🔹Fight or flight: feeling anxious, angry, panicked, or restless, this is hyperarousal
🔹Freeze or shutdown: feeling numb, disconnected, spaced out, or unable to act, this is hypoarousal

People with trauma can swing between these states and feel like they’re always “on edge” or like they “can’t cope.” It’s not because they’re weak – it’s because their brain and body are doing what they think is needed to stay safe.

The good news is that with time, support, and the right tools (like therapy, grounding, and body-based practices), people can slowly expand their window of tolerance and feel more stable and in control again.
