“The first principle of recovery is the empowerment of the survivor. The person must be the author and arbiter of their own recovery. Others may offer advice, support, assistance, affection, and care, but not cure”

The way we respond to trauma matters. When services understand trauma, and how to support people who have experienced it, they can create safer, more empowering spaces.

Trauma-informed care starts with six key principles:

🌿 Safety: Creating physical, emotional, and cultural environments where people feel secure and respected.

🤝 Trust: Being open, honest, and predictable in every interaction so people know what to expect.

🌱 Choice: Offering options and supporting people to make decisions about their own care.

🧩 Collaboration: Working with people, valuing their input, and recognising them as experts in their own lives.

💪 Empowerment: Focusing on strengths, building confidence, and supporting people to regain control.

🌏 Respect for diversity: Acknowledging that culture, identity, and lived experience shape how trauma is understood and healed, and continually learning to provide inclusive, respectful care.

📢 16 Days of Activism: Day 3!

to the beginnings of WHEQ 🌱

Founded in 1982, the idea for our organisation came out of a consciousness-raising group for women who were concerned about the lack of services specifically catering for the health needs of women. The founders wanted to see high quality, free and accessible healthcare and information for women in the state of Queensland. They believed accessible health information was necessary to destigmatise women’s healthcare, and that this would enable Queensland women to make informed decisions about their own lives. ❤

Today, on day 2 of 16 Days of Activism, we're asking what is trauma?

Trauma is complex and it doesn’t just happen in life-threatening moments. It can arise from any experience that overwhelms your sense of safety or control. It can affect your body, your emotions, your memory, your relationships, and the way you move through the world.

The Centre of Australia defines trauma as 'a psychological wound that has occurred due to a person’s perception of a stressful event.'

Trauma isn’t just about what happened; it’s about how it was experienced. And everyone responds differently.

By understanding trauma, we can create safer, more compassionate communities that support healing and recovery for all.

☎ Support is available:
If you are in immediate danger, please call 000.
Or call Lifeline on 13 11 14 for crisis support.

❤ If you're a woman or gender-diverse person in Queensland, you can access free telephone counselling through 1800 4 WOMEN (1800 496 636).

Today is the start of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence! This year, we’re putting the spotlight on trauma and gender informed care.

Trauma affects people in many ways, and gender shapes how that trauma is experienced, how people seek help, and how systems respond. When services understand this, they can better support women and gender-diverse people to feel safe, respected, and heard.

At Women’s Health & Equality Queensland, we’re committed to creating environments where people feel in control of their own healing. Over the next 16 days we'll be sharing insights, resources and stories all about trauma and gender informed care.

Together, we can create a world where every woman and gender-diverse person feels safe, supported, and empowered.

Today, on Trans Day of Remembrance, we honor and remember the lives of transgender and gender-diverse people who have been lost to violence and discrimination.

This day is a solemn reminder of the urgent need to stand against transphobia and to advocate for equality, safety, and dignity for all.

At Women's Health and Equality Queensland, we support the freedom of trans and gender-diverse people to be themselves, to have bodily autonomy and access to healthcare and to be safe in their communities.
