✨Teaching your newborn when it’s day and night✨
For the first THREE weeks of life, baby should be sleeping in a bright room during the day and a pitch black room during the night.
This way baby is ultra exposed to daylight during the day, and teaching baby this is day time, verses night time being dark and quiet so baby learns this is night time.
After the initial 3 weeks of daylight exposure, baby should be in a day/night routine. This is when baby should start sleeping at all times in a very dark sleep space, and then exposed to sunlight first thing in the morning to set up the daily body clock (circadian rhythm) and have plenty of play in bright places in between daily naps.

Rolling is one of the biggest sleep milestones parents worry about.

The key thing to remember is this:

➡ Always place baby on their back to start sleep.

If they roll independently, they can remain in the position they find.

But the sleep space becomes even more important once babies are mobile:
• No toys
• No bumpers
• No loose blankets

A clear cot ensures baby can move safely as their skills develop.

It’s Safe Sleep Week, and it’s the perfect time to refresh the basics.

Following the ABCs of Safe Sleep - Alone, Back, Cot significantly reduces the risk of sleep-related accidents.

A safe sleep space should always include:
• A firm mattress
• A fitted sheet
• Baby placed on their back

Everything else, like toys, pillows, blankets and bumpers should stay out of the cot.

Safe sleep doesn’t have to be complicated. Simple is safest.

It’s Safe Sleep Week, and I’ll be sharing a series of posts focused on helping families create safe, supportive sleep environments for their babies and toddlers.

As a baby and toddler sleep consultant, one of the most important parts of my work is helping parents understand how sleep safety and healthy sleep go hand in hand.

Throughout this week we’ll talk about:
✨ Safe sleep basics
✨ Cot and sleep environment safety
✨ Bed sharing considerations
✨ What changes when babies start rolling
✨ Temperature and sleep safety

My goal is always to provide calm, practical and evidence based information so parents can make informed decisions that feel right for their families.

If you’re a parent, caregiver or expecting a baby, I’d love for you to follow along and share these posts, safe sleep education can genuinely save lives.

Stay tuned for the first post later today. 🤍

Rice cereal in the milk bottle?!

I get asked all the time if parents should put rice cereal in their babies milk bottles before they go to bed. The only answer I ever give is NO!

Firstly, it does not actually help with sleep! Secondly, if your baby is not old enough to be eating solids then all you are doing by giving them rice cereal in the milk bottle is upsetting their under developed digestive system which can cause ongoing issues.
Thirdly, if your baby is old enough for solids, then focus on the types of solids you were giving them during their awake periods to make sure that they are digesting their food adequately. This will encourage better sleep!

As a sleep consultant, one thing I’ll never compromise on is safe sleep 🤍
Especially when families choose to co-sleep or bed share.

Babies grow and move fast. A space that felt safe last month can quickly become risky once they start rolling, wriggling or crawling. If a baby can move, their sleep environment must protect them from falls and suffocation hazards.

A few key safety reminders 👇
• Make sure your baby can’t roll or fall out of the bed
• Keep the sleep space clear of loose blankets, pillows and soft items
• Ensure your mattress is firm and flat
• Be mindful of gaps between mattresses, walls or bed frames
• Dress baby warmly instead of adding extra bedding

Safe sleep isn’t about fear, it’s about setting up the environment so everyone can rest with confidence.

💬 Free support:
If you’d like a second set of eyes, I’m offering a free sleep space safety check.
Send me a DM with a photo or short video of your baby’s sleep environment and I’ll give personalised feedback and guidance on creating a safer setup for your child.
