Despite high profile education programmes, unrecognised oesophageal intubation continues to be a cause of death and serious hypoxic brain injury worldwide, across all airway management disciplines and levels of experience.
In response to this issue the Project for Universal Management of Airways has worked in consultation with the international Airway Societies to produce a consensus guideline on preventing unrecognised oesophageal intubation that is intended for use by all airway practitioners independent of geography, discipline or context. This guideline has been endorsed by the Difficult Airway Society, Society for Airway Management, European Airway Management Society, All India Difficult Airway Association, Canadian Airway Focus Group, Safe Airway Society and International Airway Management Society. Published in Anaesthesia, the guideline will be available free from August 17th at 22:00 UTC via the following link https://doi.org/10.1111/anae.15817 .
This livestream event, hosted by Kariem El-Boghdadly, will feature guideline authors including Nicholas Chrimes, Tim Cook, Andy Higgs, Tino Greif, George Kovacs, Stuart Marshall, Sheila Nainan Myatra, Ellen O’Sullivan & Max Sorbello. The panel will discuss the need for guidelines for preventing unrecognised oesophageal intubation, provide an overview of the key recommendations and address any challenges or controversies arising from these.
Be part of the conversation and submit your comments and questions for the panel using the YouTube chat function (note that while a YouTube account is not required to view the livestream, you must be logged into a YouTube account to submit questions, so set up your account in advance).
Waveform capnography is a key component of preventing unrecognised oesophageal intubation so the guideline launch will also be used to raise money for the Global Capnography Project which works to provide waveform capnography monitoring to low resource settings.
