🎶 Rewire Haven Choir - Term 4 starts Monday 6 October! 🎶

Every Monday, Yvonne, our choir leader and music therapist, makes the journey from the city to Boronia. Here’s what the Rewire - The Haven Choir means to her:

“Every Monday, my week begins on a train ride from the city to Boronia. The buildings slowly give way to those beautiful mountains. it always brings me such a peaceful feeling. It’s the perfect prelude to what truly fills my heart: the Rewire Haven Choir.

This choir isn’t about perfection. It’s about togetherness. Wrong notes, forgotten words, quiet listening. Every moment belongs. This is a place where everyone is welcome, exactly as they are. That’s the real power of a therapeutic community choir. Inclusive, gentle, and for everyone.

We sing familiar songs, we share memories, and we laugh. For those living with dementia and their families, this is a safe and gentle place. Music becomes a bridge that connects us all, allowing everyone to feel seen, heard, and valued.

Though I stand as the conductor and music therapist, I’m still learning the growing together with the choir. As an Asian therapist still finding my place in Australia, you’ve all taught me so much about music, culture, life, and kindness.

好消息：澳洲音樂治療協會（AMTA）現已成為 全國自我監管健康專業聯盟（NASRHP）的正式會員。

經過嚴格的申請與評估程序，NASRHP 確認 AMTA 符合其 12 項基準標準——這是自我監管的輔助健康專業的正式框架。

Good news: AMTA is now a full member of the National Alliance of Self Regulating Health Professions (NASRHP).

After a rigorous application and assessment process, NASHRP has confirmed that AMTA meets its 12 benchmark standards, the formal framework for allied health professions that are self-regulating.

[Dementia Action Week] (15-21Sept2025)

Dementia is a brain condition. It is not just a part of aging. Dementia doesn’t just impact the persons living with the condition, but also their immediate carers, friends or wider social network. Dementia is not just about being forgetful, but it can affect mood, behaviour and more.

Bilingual Music & Therapy partner with The Haven Day Centre and run a weekly community choir for individuals living with dementia and their carers. In this choir, it’s not about singing perfectly. But it’s about being connected and valued in a safe space via familiar music. 🌸🎵

[Results of the NDIS Independent Review]�

In November 2024, NDIS commissioned Dr Duckett to review the evidence base and pricing for music and art therapy. The results were finally released last week. Key points include:

* Music therapy and art therapy are recognised as evidence-based and beneficial to some participants. Both therapies will remain funded under NDIS.

* Therapies must be delivered by qualified therapists registered with professional associations (e.g. AMTA, ANZACATA).

* From 24 November 2025, session fees will be reduced from $193.99/hour to $156.16/hour.

This 20% price cut is deeply concerning. Many practices, including ours, are already under pressure. In fact, we had to close our Blackburn clinic two months ago after misinformation and funding fears caused significant client loss. These changes will put further strain on small practices and may reduce access to quality services.

As you know, music and art therapy are not just “fun activities”. Every session you see involves careful planning, professional training, and ongoing supervision. Our therapists—who are all master’s qualified and registered with AMTA or ANZACATA—work tirelessly to support participants with complex needs, including psychosocial disabilities. This work is highly skilled and deserves fair recognition.

In the meantime:

* Session fees will remain unchanged until 24 November 2025.
* Both AMTA and ANZACATA are in active discussions with NDIA about fairer pricing.
* We are carefully reviewing how this change will affect our services.

【NDIS 獨立檢討結果】

2024 年 11 月，NDIS 委託 Duckett 博士檢視音樂治療與藝術治療的實證基礎及收費標準。結果於上週終於出爐，重點包括：

- 音樂治療與藝術治療獲確認為具實證基礎，對部分參與者有益。兩種治療將繼續獲得 NDIS 資助。

- 治療必須由合資格並已註冊於專業協會（例如 AMTA、ANZACATA）的治療師提供。

- 自 2025 年 11 月 24 日起，單次收費將由每小時 $193.99 降至 $156.16。

這項 20% 的降價 令人極為憂慮。包括我們在內的許多機構已面臨龐大壓力。事實上，由於錯誤資訊及資助不確定性造成嚴重客源流失，我們兩個月前不得不關閉 Blackburn 診所。這些變動將進一步加重小型機構的負擔，並可能削弱參與者獲得優質服務的機會。

- 收費將維持不變，直至 2025 年 11 月 24 日。
- AMTA 與 ANZACATA 正積極與 NDIA 商討更合理的收費標準。
我們正審慎檢視此項變動將如何影響我們的服務。

Throwback Moment!

Music technology is becoming increasingly popular in today’s world, making music more accessible and therapeutic for people of all ages and abilities.

Last month, our talented music therapist Joyce Shang led a fantastic workshop on music technology and GarageBand. She inspired our team with creative ways to use music technology to achieve various therapy goals and support our clients.
