Throwback Moment!

Music technology is becoming increasingly popular in today’s world, making music more accessible and therapeutic for people of all ages and abilities.

Last month, our talented music therapist Joyce Shang led a fantastic workshop on music technology and GarageBand. She inspired our team with creative ways to use music technology to achieve various therapy goals and support our clients.

With a background in music technology and as a highly skilled registered music therapist, Joyce brings both expertise and passion to her work.

With a heavy heart, we announce the closure of our Blackburn clinic.

On a personal note, this clinic at 2/29 Railway Road — along with our previous space on the same street — has been a dream in the making for the past nine years since I became a registered music therapist. Coming from Hong Kong, I’ve always felt a deep calling to support Melbourne’s bilingual community through music and creative arts, drawing on my cultural heritage and personal journey.

By God’s grace, we moved into this beautiful, ground-level space last year to become more visible and accessible to the community — never imagining the NDIS changes that would soon follow. Unfortunately, the new price guide froze therapy fees for another year, placing additional pressure on our operations and making it increasingly difficult to sustain the business.

Since last December, I’ve worked around the clock to advocate for music and creative arts therapy as professional, evidence-based, and effective allied health interventions. My incredible team continued to provide high-quality care with professionalism and heart, even as we faced significant challenges to our morale and reputation. Despite all our efforts, the losses became too great to recover from. On top of this, personal and family burdens began to impact my health, making it necessary to step back and close the clinic.

This decision is deeply painful. I am truly sorry to disappoint the community that has believed in and supported us. But I know it’s time for a reset — to rest, to heal, and to reflect on what truly matters.

But we are not giving up.
Our team remains committed and strong. We will continue to provide mobile services, and we’re now partnering with Therapy Lab in Blackburn North to offer in-clinic appointments.

較早前，我們舉辦了一場以「移民孩子與情緒」為主題的講座。當中，我們的心理戲劇治療師 Kin Sir 分享了孩子的成長階段、情緒需要，並帶領家長體驗如何透過戲劇治療，協助孩子管理情緒。

Kin Sir 也接受了 ABC 記者的訪問，強調有效的治療需要認識及調節文化差異，而家長和孩子的情緒狀態是互相影響的。

A while ago, we hosted a talk about “Emotions and Migrant Children,” where our drama psychotherapist, Kin Sir, shared insights on children’s developmental stages and emotional needs. He also guided parents in experiencing how drama therapy can help children manage their emotions.

Kin Sir was interviewed by ABC reporters, emphasizing that effective therapy requires understanding and bridging cultural differences. He also noted that parents’ and children’s emotional states are deeply intertwined.

🎶 為期五週、由我們與新生命社區關懷（NEWLIFE）合辦的「奇妙音樂之旅」已圓滿結束！在這五週中，我們診所創辦人兼音樂治療師 Josephine，向家長們分享了音樂治療如何支援孩子的發展，特別是言語發展及自閉症相關的需求。同時，我們也推介了一些簡單實用的技巧，讓家長們在家中也能促進孩子的語言、認知與社交能力發展。

🎶 Our five-week “Magical Music Journey” program, co-hosted with NEWLIFE Community Care, has successfully wrapped up! Over these five weeks, Josephine, our clinic’s founder and music therapist, introduced how music therapy supports children’s development—especially in speech development and the needs of children with autism. We also shared some practical techniques for parents to use at home to boost their children’s language, cognitive, and social development.

Educational Psychologist - Ms. Ming Lai Cheung, Gem

👩🏻Gem is a registered Educational Psychologist (Hong Kong) and Psychologist (Australia) with over 20 years of experience. She holds a Master’s in Psychology (Child & Developmental) from Monash University and specializes in psychological assessments, interventions, and support for children and adolescents with diverse needs, including Autism , ADHD, Learning disabilities, Emotional /Behavioural challenges, and Giftedness.

🏫Skilled in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), cognitive-behavioral approaches, and psychotherapy, she designs tailored treatment plans for clients across clinics, schools, and medical centers. Gem has also contributed to academia as a fieldwork supervisor (HKU), part-time lecturer (HKBU), and guest speaker (HKU SPACE, HKIEd). She served as an Honorary Consultant at HKIEd’s Child Assessment Centre and held leadership roles, including Treasurer of the Hong Kong Association for Infant Mental Health.
