This Body Image and Eating Disorders Awareness Week (BIEDAW), I really want to spark ideas on how to reduce comparison. I find one of the most crippling factors to poor body image is comparison to others.

This can mean comparing yourself as a 15 year old to a 30 year old Actor who's playing a superhero in the latest blockbuster. Or being in your 50s comparing yourself to the influencers in their 20s. Even comparisons towards your peers can invoke unwanted feelings detrimental to your journey with body image and food.

This comparison is unrealistic and not focused on you and your success towards improving self-worth and self-esteem. Remember that there are so many factors to why body shape differs in everyone.

When we aim to eat regularly, it's easy to get distracted by work, the new Zelda or doom scrolling on Instagram. All these distractions sometimes just need a little alarm every 2-4 hours as a little prompt to eat again.

You might also have found hunger signals really hard to hear. Especially trying to distinguish if it is hunger, thirst, boredom or some other reason. Setting alarms here is a great idea to have an external signal if our internal signal is on low volume.

When you go on a diet, you are essentially disregarding your personal relationship with food to eat like someone else. This does not feel natural long-term and we will inevitably resort back to our personal food behaviours.

When we don't achieve this diet longer-term, we can often have a strong feeling of guilt when "slipping back into old habits". Please know that you are better of starting with your foundation of food and aiming to find a balance of all foods in your personal food behaviours.

Delicious Tik Tok pasta is so easy to make. I easily get around 3 meals so it's great for meal prep.

The way I make it is:

1. Bake the following in the oven for 30mins
- Tomatos
- Feta
- Salt/pepper
- Thyme
- Garlic

2. Prepare pasta (I use Pearl cous cous)

3. Pull out oven and stir pasta into tomato's and Feta 😋

If we can find a form of enjoyable movement such as mindful yoga, bouldering, or a walk in nature, we can improve our relationship with our body.

This works as we begin to realise our bodies are much more than a physique, but have functions such as moving the way we enjoy.

If we improve how we feel towards our body and see it more than just a physique, we can begin to reduce guilt towards weight loss, maintenance and gain. This can improve our relationship with food as we begin to unlearn the pressure to achieve a physique through diet, and instead fuel our bodies for the movement and lifestyle we enjoy!

If we ignore our hunger signals, our body will adapt and we may not be able to recognise or sense this feeling.

For some, the idea of hunger signals disappearing sounds ideal. However, your goals of improving your relationship with food cannot be achieved if you ignore a natural signal from your brain.

Who do you think the enemy really is when it comes to diet culture?

Diet creators/brands have been known to state that foods they want you to exclude in their diet are harmful. They use words such as 'damaging', 'toxic' and even 'carcinogenic' towards foods such as the simple apple 🍏
