Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome:
Polycystic o***y syndrome is a common hormonal disorder affecting
women of reproductive age. It affects about 8-13% of women.
PCOS can cause period problems, trouble falling pregnant, acne, excess hair
growth and excess weight.
A PCOS diagnosis requires 2 out of the following 3
1. Irregular Periods
2. Excess hair growth/Changes in hormone levels in blood- excess of
male hormones
3. Ultrasound showing multiple small cysts in o***y.
Some long-term health issues are also more likely in women with PCOS, but
the good news is that many of these problems can be managed with a
healthy lifestyle.
Losing just 5 to 10 percent of your body weight can help regulate your menstrual
cycle and improve PCOS symptoms. Weight loss can also:
• improve cholesterol levels
• lower insulin levels
• reduce heart disease and diabetes risks
In addition you may also need hormonal pills/ insulin sensitising medications to
manage the symptoms.

Your baby’s movements during pregnancy:

During pregnancy your baby’s movements are a good indicator of baby’s health
and wellbeing. Getting to know your baby’s movement patterns can help you
know that your baby is well and recognise if something has changed.

Your baby’s movements may be different to another woman’s baby or even to a
previous baby of your own.

Common myths about baby movements:
It is not true that babies move less towards the end of pregnancy. You should
continue to feel your baby move right up to the time you go into labour and
whilst you are in labour too.
If you are concerned about your baby’s movements, having something to eat or
drink to stimulate your baby does not work.
In any instance, if you are concerned about a change in your baby’s movements,
contact your midwife or doctor immediately.

Weight gain during Pregnancy.
Gaining a healthy amount of weight is an important part of keeping you and your baby healthy during
pregnancy and after birth.

How much weight you should gain while pregnant will depend on your pre-pregnancy weight and your
pregnancy.(eg Twins or Triplets)
If you were in the healthy weight range before becoming pregnant, then ideally you should gain
between 11.5 and 16 kilogram s during your pregnancy. You should expect to gain 1–1.5 kilogram s in
the first three months, then 1.5–2 kilograms each month until you give birth.

If you’re overweight or underweight, the goal posts will shift a little.
Most of us have heard of ‘body mass index’ or BMI. Your BMI is a number, and gives an idea of how
much weight you’re carrying across your frame by dividing your weight by your height. A healthy BMI
is between 18.5 and 24.9
