“There are no positive or negative emotions,
just emotions we feel when our needs are met
and emotions we feel when our needs are not met.”
— Marshall Rosenberg
….
We can think of emotions as messengers. Messengers that help us understand what we need, and what we want more and less of.
Our understanding of, and relationship to, emotions are most significantly shaped by how our parents (or closest caregivers) understood, expressed, and responded to emotions in our early childhood years. These early experiences then become templates for how we relate to emotions, and they usually operate automatically, outside of awareness.
How well do you understand your emotions and the needs they are connected to?
If you feel confused by or afraid of emotions, therapy can help by providing space to explore your emotional habits in the presence of a calm and supportive therapist.
