Being part of the OKKIYO marketing team automatically means we’re enrolled in Eye School 👀🎓

We get to come to work, create fun content showing off our very cool boss… and learn a ridiculous amount about eye health, sensitivity, and how makeup actually affects your eyes.

Not your average marketing job 👀

What actually happens when mascara flakes get in your eyes? 👀

Those tiny flakes can end up sitting in your tear film, where they rub against the surface of your eye and cause irritation. It can feel gritty, watery, or just plain uncomfortable.

When flakes build up along the eyelid margin (like you can see here on Mikyla), they can clog the oil glands over time. Those glands play a huge role in keeping your tears stable and your eyes comfortable. When they’re blocked or inflamed, they can’t do their job properly, which can lead to ongoing dryness and irritation.

The number of people we’ve converted to brown mascara as part of their makeup routine is actually wild 🤎

It’s softer. More natural. Still gives definition without that super harsh contrast, especially for lighter features or everyday wear.

Take a closer look at our brown mascara up close.

What’s the best way to remove eye makeup? Straight from an eye surgeon 👀

While yes, you can be allergic to pretty much anything… it’s often more likely that your mascara is aggravating an underlying eye condition rather than being a true allergy.

Things like flaky formulas, certain ingredients, or products that dry out your tear film can all contribute to irritation and inflammation. Sometimes it’s not just one ingredient, it’s the overall formulation and how it interacts with already sensitive eyes.

That’s exactly why OKKIYO was created, with sensitive eyes front of mind.

That said, no product on earth is perfect for absolutely everyone (we wish!). And we genuinely love that there are now more eye-conscious options on the market, because it means more people can find something that works for their eyes 👀✨

Did you know around 80% of eye surgeons are male? So for a long time, the go-to advice for women with sensitive eyes was simply… “stop wearing makeup.” Jacqui has been an eye surgeon for over 20 years, and that never sat right with her. She loves makeup. She understands the confidence, creativity and self-expression that comes with it. Sitting there in a full face while telling patients to give it up completely just didn’t feel like the right answer. So instead of telling women to stop wearing makeup.. she decided to help create something better. And that’s exactly why OKKIYO was born 👀✨
